On This Day Three Years Ago…

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED OCTOBER 10, 2018, 9:05 AM]

Daniel Cormier is stepping back into the Octagon a lot sooner than expected. “DC” won the UFC heavyweight title this past summer. He knocked out Stipe Miocic in the first round to become the UFC’s second-ever “Champ Champ.” After the fight, Brock Lesnar was brought into the Octagon, teasing a fight between the pair early next year.

It was initially believed Cormier wouldn’t fight until then. However, the UFC has pulled the trigger on having “DC” main event UFC 230 from Madison Square Garden next month (November 3, 2018). Cormier will defend his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis. Lewis earned the title opportunity after his performance at UFC 229. “The Black Beast” defeated Alexander Volkov in spectacular fashion. Lewis was being dominated by the Russian for the first three rounds. Also, his cardio seemed to be hindering his performance as well.

With seconds left in the fight, however, Lewis exploded with a last-effort blitz. The Texan was able to land a huge overhand that knocked Volkov to the mat. Lewis followed up with ground-and-pound to put the fight away. Initially, Lewis shut down talk of a heavyweight title opportunity after the fight. Of course, his tune has obviously changed.

One man who doesn’t seem to be too happy about the fight announcement is Stipe Miocic. He believes he deserves an immediate rematch for the heavyweight throne against Cormier. Miocic makes a solid case. As the most successful champion in UFC heavyweight history, it’s hard to deny the Cleveland native his request.

The Exchange

Miocic and Cormier exchanged words on Twitter recently, shortly after it was announced Cormier vs. Lewis will headline UFC 230. Check out what they had to say here:

“Damn seems like I’ve knocked my guy silly. Come on my guy don’t be thirsty! We’re still good. You got next if Brock doesn’t make it!”

“You beat me that night. I respect that. But it would never happen again. I carried the torch in this division for a long time. I’ve been staying up all night with my new born daughter and I still offered to fight you nov 3 with ZERO camp weeks ago.”

What do you think about a possible rematch between Cormier and Miocic?

Nate Diaz Calls Out Dustin Poirier For 185lb Fight, ‘The Diamond’ Responds

Nate Diaz

Dustin Poirier’s next match-up may not necessarily be for the belt with middleweight Nate Diaz proposing a bout at 185.

Poirier who is now 28-6 came out victorious in his trilogy match-up with the ‘Notorious’ McGregor last Saturday at UFC 264 event. It had been touted that Poirier’s next fight would indeed be for the lightweight belt where he would be facing the newly crowned champion Charles Oliveira. This bout was expected to be scheduled for the end of 2021.

However, with that in mind, Nate Diaz took to Twitter in an attempt to call out the number one contender.

Diaz (20-13) is coming off a decision loss to welterweight Leon Edwards. Though the result didn’t go Diaz’s way, the Stockton-raised fighter was close to shocking the world when he was ‘Rocky’ Edwards wobbled in the last minute of the fight. Unfortunately, Diaz was unable to capitalize on Edwards immobility ultimately leading to the decision loss. The fight instead was a war that went the full distance, impressing fans and athletes alike.

Diaz has since tweeted a photo of him and Poirier’s face-off from the previously slated UFC 244 bout scheduled between the two, the photo followed the caption “185lbs. Pull-up.”

Poirier was quick to reply responding with a tweet that read “I’d touch you up at any weight”.

Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz were originally set to fight one another at UFC 230 in 2018 however the bout fell through and never came to fruition due to external circumstances. Diaz instead went on to face Anthony Pettis, Masvidal, and Leon Edwards, winning just one out of the three bouts in a decision victory over former UFC competitor Anthony Pettis.

Poirier on the other hand went on to become the intern lightweight champion and compete for the lightweight title in which he fell short in his match-up against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. Poirier however is riding a three-fight win streak having won a total of 8 out of his last 9 fights.

It is hard to argue against the fact that Poirier’s next fight should indeed be for the lightweight title, however, would a match-up between ‘The Diamond’ and Nate Diaz be one you would like to see at 185?

Nate Diaz claims Dustin Poirier “pu**ied out” of their UFC 230 matchup last year and questions why nobody is asking him about it.

Diaz returns to the Octagon at UFC 241 this weekend when he takes on Anthony Pettis in a welterweight bout. It will be the Stockton native’s first fight in nearly three years.

However, he could have made his return sooner had his originally planned UFC 230 lightweight bout with Poirier gone through. In the end, Poirier had to pull out through injury. But Diaz didn’t take the news well, and when asked why the fight didn’t happen, he had this to say.

“[It didn’t happen] because Dustin Poirier pu**ied out is what happened,” Diaz told ESPN. “We were supposed to fight and there was whatever going on with me and the UFC was happening because they were f*cking with me or I was f*cking with them, however they want to say it, but he jumped out of the fight because he couldn’t deal with it.

“He couldn’t sleep at night. I’m like, ‘why are you even worried about me? You’re supposed to be a fighter, don’t worry about what I got going on. I’m showing up to fight you. Why did you pull out and why is no one asking you that? Why are you getting a title shot?’ That’s a win for me.

I already beat him. If me and you are supposed to meet for training tomorrow, for jiu-jitsu or boxing or MMA or whatever — we have an appointment. We’re going tomorrow at seven p.m. and we’re going to train. Me and you. And if you get a f*cking stomach ache or your tooth ache or your hair or any of that or something ain’t right or your girlfriend’s mad and you don’t make it to seven o’clock, you lost, dude.

You can’t make it, you can’t cut it. Straight up, that’s a L. Justify it however you want.”

What do you make of Diaz’s comments on Poirier pulling out of their fight?

Derrick Lewis Still Hasn’t Cashed In On Free Popeyes Chicken For Life

Two months later, and Derrick Lewis is still yet to cash in free Popeyes Chicken for life in his hometown of Houston, Texas, which he earned prior to UFC 230.

It was either brilliant marketing or a case of dumb luck for Lewis who earned free chicken for life for defending Popeyes honor. Still, two months later and “The Black Beast” is yet to cash in on his culinary reward.

“I haven’t picked the card up yet,” Lewis old MMAjunkie Radio on Thursday. “They told me I got to go to that location and pick the card up. I’ve been busy. I haven’t picked my card up yet, and I haven’t been to Popeyes since the fight.”

The funny thing is the location that Lewis is referring to is only a mile-and-a-half away from his home. It’s not that Lewis hasn’t eaten his favorite fried chicken chain since his loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 230. He has, but for some reason his wife paid for it:

“My wife did bring home Popeyes two weeks ago, but she paid for it,” Lewis said. “And I told her, ‘Why you paying for it? You should’ve just told them.’ I didn’t know she was going to bring home Popeyes.”

Maybe Lewis isn’t in such a joking mood following his one-sided loss to Cormier at UFC 230. He may not be looking to get free chicken, but he is looking to get back on track in the Octagon.

“The Black Beast” will return to action on March 9 as he will headline UFC on ESPN+ 4 against former heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos.
