Israel Adesanya Meeting With Dana White About Possible UFC Title Shot

Israel Adesanya’s last fight may have earned him a shot at the UFC middleweight title.

Adesanya had his coming out party at UFC 230 last month in Madison Square Garden. He made quick work of top-ranked middleweight Derek Brunson, finishing Brunson via first-round knockout. After the win, Adesanya has been fantasy booked by mixed martial arts (MMA) fans against some of the elite at 185 pounds.

However, it looks like the next time Adesanya takes the Octagon, it could possibly be for a title. UFC President Dana White recently revealed to the Daily Telegraph that he will be meeting with Adesanya about a possible title opportunity. He could take on the winner of Robert Whittaker vs. Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234 (via Newshub):

“It’s very possible, yes. That’s why he’s flying in here, Israel wants to meet with me and talk. When he read that I was flying in here this week, he said he wanted to come across and talk, and that’s awesome.

“That would certainly make the most sense. In fact, if these two guys [Whittaker & Adesanya] fight, it’s something I would really look at doing in a stadium here.

“Israel is one of those guys who, if he can deliver, if he can win a world title, he will be incredibly famous. And famous all over the planet, this kid can be incredibly big.

“I love everything about him. The way he talks, the way he fights … and the kid wants to fight every month.”

It would be an interesting move to give Adesanya a title opportunity so quickly. Brunson was essentially the first and only big name “Stylebender” has defeated. Albeit, he did it in dominant fashion and showed off some world-class striking in the process.

However, also at UFC 230, another middleweight made quite the case for a shot at the title. Jacare Souza knocked out Chris Weidman in their co-main event scrap to make quite a statement. It will be interesting to see what the UFC decides to do when it’s all said and done.

Robert Whittaker vs. Kelvin Gastelum set to take place at the upcoming UFC 234 pay-per-view event. The fight promotion announced on Tuesday morning the news. The date was first reported by ESPN. This goes to show that Gastelum wants that UFC gold bad enough, he’ll have to go to enemy territory.

Whittaker & Gastelum Coach Before They Fight

It was revealed several months ago that once Whittaker is healthy enough to fight again, he will make his next title defense. This was of course against the top contender. They also booked him to coach the upcoming The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 28 opposite of Gastelum.

This season of the reality show will wrap up on Nov. 30 at Pearl Theatre at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. For those who may not recall, both fighters previously appeared on the show. Whittaker won The Ultimate Fighter: Smashes welterweight tournament. Meanwhile, Gastelum was crowned middleweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter 17.

Whittaker won the interim title when he beat Yoel Romero back at UFC 213 in July of 2017 by unanimous decision. The UFC booked this fight yet again in the main event for the UFC 225 pay-per-view event at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. This is where Romero suffered a devastating split decision loss to Whittaker. The UFC champ is currently on a nine-fight win streak.

On the flip side, Gastelum made his return to the middleweight division back in 2016 where he surged up the rankings. Thus, he became a title contender with wins over the likes of Souza, Michael Bisping, Tim Kennedy, and Johny Hendricks. He has not fought inside of the Octagon since May 2018 when he beat Souza.

The UFC 234 pay-per-view event is set to be held on February 10, 2019 at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on ESPN+.

UFC President Dana White had some words of praise for Israel Adesanya after his impressive win at UFC 230. But he still wants to bring the fighter up slow.

Adesanya did a little bit of everything last night. He demonstrated why so many are high on his ability in the Octagon. For nearly the entire fight it looked as if Derek Brunson didn’t even belong in the same cage as him.

White offered his praise at the UFC 230 post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting), noting Adesanya put a ‘stamp on his stoppage:

“Israel has been a guy who has been on the rise here for a minute, but I really felt like tonight was his first big test,” White said “His opponent hits like a truck and wrestles really well, and Madison Square Garden, opening the show, man, did he deliver. Many people — including me — think this kid is the future. And he went out and put a stamp on it tonight.”

Future Is Bright

If it wasn’t for Daniel Cormier, who continued making history last night, Adesanya may have been the clear-cut “Fighter of the Year” for 2018. He is unbeaten overall with a record of 15-0. More importantly, ‘The Last Stylebender’ is 4-0 this year in the UFC.

Although he doesn’t plan on fighting again this year, a certain rumored fight has caught his eye. UFC 234 will be in Melbourne, Australia in February. Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is rumored to be defending his title against Kelvin Gastelum in the main event. Adesanya would like to serve as the standby in case disaster may strike. A “Last Stylebender” plan, if you will.

A title shot is almost certainly in Adesanya’s future, but White would like the young man to slow his roll a bit. He looked back at his first impression of Adesanya and knew he had found a big talent. White said he is the total package but wants him to “pump the brakes”:

“The minute I saw this kid, I was like, holy sh-t this is really good, I like this,” White said. “Then you hear him talk, I like that too. He’s the whole package. He is very ambitious, I would like him to pump the brakes a little bit. This guy wants to f—king fight everybody right now and he wants to fight every month, which I love.

Dana’s Advice

White offered advice to Adesanya to find a spot in between fighting all the time and not enough.

“Listen, you want to become a big star? Keep fighting. If you’re a young guy who’s healthy enough to fight all the time, I absolutely advise it. Do it. What you don’t want to do is put on a great performance and disappear because people forget real quickly. But yeah, I like him very, very much and I don’t want to move him as fast as he wants to be moved, so he and I will get together and find a happy medium.”

Let us know what you think. Is Adesanya being moved along too quickly, or do you think he could challenge for a title his next fight?
