Featherweight champion Max Holloway will face Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight title at the upcoming UFC 236 pay-per-view on April 13 in Atlanta.

As first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto and confirmed by UFC President Dana White, Holloway will face Poirier in the main event of UFC 236 that will take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Another interim bout between Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya will serve as the evening’s co-main event.

The UFC decided to go ahead and create an interim lightweight title while the champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov is serving a nine-month suspension for his involvement in the UFC 229 post-fight melee.

For the time being, Holloway will hold on to his featherweight strap and have a chance to become a “champ-champ” [suddenly that is not as impressive as it was just last year]. Poirier will finally get the money fight he has lobbied for since July.

Poirier holds a victory over Holloway when the Hawaiian made his Octagon debut at UFC 143 back in 2012. He was able to choke the champion to sleep on that night.

According to White, former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson was offered the fight opposite Holloway. However, turned the fight down.

Perhaps that’s what Ferguson was referring to in a Tweet just the other day.

Former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has reportedly been offered a fight but he is unsure if it meets his or his crew’s “standards”.

Ferguson’s next fight has been a topic of discussion in MMA for some time. He has been linked to fights with everyone from lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagoemdov to featherweight king Max Holloway.

However, neither of those fights have come to fruition as of yet. Or have they? Earlier today “El Cucuy” Tweeted that he, in fact, had been offered a fight but he isn’t sure if it meets his standards:

There is no reason to not take Ferguson at his word here. There has been a lot of buzz around a potential interim lightweight title fight between Ferguson and Holloway at UFC 236.

However, considering the magnetite of that match-up, it’s unlikely “El Cucuy” would not be stoked for such a contest.

Hot off her submission win over Rachael Ostovich at UFC on ESPN+ 1 last month, Paige VanZant’s UFC return is set.

“PVZ” will take on Poliana Botelho at UFC 236 on pay-per-view (PPV), per a report from Combate. The show goes down on April 13, 2019 at a city and venue yet to be determined. It has already been reported that Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum will fight on the card for an interim 185-pound title.

VanZant snapped a two-fight losing streak against Ostovich in Brooklyn. She had previously been defeated by both Michelle Waterson and Jessica-Rose Clark. Her defeat to Clark was her debut at 125 pounds. Now, she hopes to put together her first win streak since 2015 against Botelho.

Botelho had a five-fight win streak stopped by Cynthia Calvillo in November. She was submitted in the first round by way of rear-naked choke on the Buenos Aires card. A victory over a name as notable as VanZant certainly isn’t a bad way to get back in the win column. In a thin flyweight division, every victory counts in regards to earning a title shot.

We’ll keep you updated as more fights continue to get added to UFC 236 and a venue and city are finally locked down.
