The numbers for the UFC 236 pay-per-view (PPV) preliminary card are in.

MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer reports that the UFC 236 prelims averaged 893,000 viewers on ESPN prior to the PPV. This is a major dropoff from the past two PPV events. UFC 235, headlined by Jon Jones vs. Anthony Smith for the light heavyweight championship, turned in an average viewership number of 1,339,000.

At UFC 234, the prelims averaged 1,480,000 viewers, as the card was headlined by Anderson Silva vs. Israel Adesanya. UFC 234 was likely boosted by the strong college basketball viewership carried over in the lead-in.

However, UFC 236’s low preliminary numbers don’t come as too much of a surprise. The preliminary card simply lacked star power, as it was headlined by a lightweight bout between Matt Frevola and Jalin Turner. Perhaps the most notable name on the card was Wilson Reis, who was defeated by Alexandre Pantoja via first-round TKO just before the headliner.

Israel Adesanya has solidified himself atop the UFC middleweight mountain.

The newly-crowned interim champion outlasted Kelvin Gastelum in a classic war in the main event of last Saturday’s UFC 236 from Atlanta, Georgia.

Now, he’ll battle it out with Robert Whittaker to determine who the best middleweight truly is as a result. However, “The Last Stylebender” also had a beef brewing with UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones due to their endless trash talking. The pair have been taking shots at one another through social media for the past several days.

Adesanya referred to Jones as the final boss in a video game at one point. This prompted former UFC middleweight title challenger Yoel Romero to get in on the fun.

The Cuban wrestling champion asked what level boss he is, captioning the post with his classic “#seeyousoonboi,” and “iluhju“:

Should Romero decide to hang around 185 pounds, a meeting with Adesanya could be inevitable. Romero has consistently nudged himself into the title picture. If Adesanya’s unification bout with Whittaker doesn’t go his way, the Nigerian might just find himself standing across the cage from “The Soldier Of God” next.

Romero’s only two losses in the UFC have come against Whittaker. His last fight was at UFC 225 in June of last year. Whittaker defeated him via split decision after another amazing five-round war. Romero remains in the title discussion because of his two close fights with the champion.

Will a similar situation unfold with Adesanya?

Israel Adesanya is the darling of the MMA world right now, but the current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has opened as the betting favorite in their future match-up.

Kelvin Gastelum saw some early success against “The Last Stylebender” despite a nearly nine-inch reach disadvantage. He even managed to drop Adesanya in Atlanta.

Perhaps Gastelum has shown somewhat of a blueprint on how to beat the gifted striker. And maybe that’s why BetOnline has Adesanya as the +140 underdog for his upcoming title unification bout against “The Reaper.” The return on Whittaker is -160.

The proposed unification bout is being targeted for September, per UFC President Dana White. The fight would be massive for the Oceania region and could sell out an 80,000-seat stadium.

September is five months away and with Whittaker’s history of injuries, there is no telling if this fight even comes to fruition. However, as the fight gets closer, the betting line on this fight should fluctuate.

Things are heating up between light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and new interim middleweight champ Israel Adesanya on social media.

Adesanya fired the first shot today and it’s been back-and-forth ever since. Adesanya thinks Jones is a sh*t c*nt, “Bones” doesn’t think “Stylebender” is ready for him. Jones also thought it was strange that Adesanya called him out then called him out being a bully hen he responded.

Regardless, Adesanya wants everyone to know who called who out first (via Twitter):

While Adesanya just competed in an instant classic interim title fight against Gastelum at UFC 236, Jones is scheduled to defend his strap at UFC 239 in July.

If Jones and Adesanya ever meet, one would think the match-up is potentially two or three years out. However, MMA is a crazy sport and anything is possible.

Let us know what you think. Who would win if Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones fought?
