Conor McGregor has not stepped in the Octagon since UFC 229 last October. Yet, that almost changed this July at UFC 240.

The Irishman revealed he was going to take on Justin Gaethje in Madison Square Garden but a hand injury derailed that.

“I believe it was leaning towards Justin Gaethje at that time. But look, the game changes so quick. Everyone comes and goes. It’s a forgetful business,” Conor McGregor said to ESPN. “It’s a cruel, cruel business. Only for the amount of history, for the amount of iconic moments that’s happened in my career – they would’ve loved to throw me away, discard me. Think of other people who haven’t had what I’ve had, who’ve gone through the trauma and the battles. For the fans. That’s who we do it for. We do it for the fans, our family, for the people. And when it’s all said and done they just discard you and it’s a cruel business.

“That’s why I was happy to see Nate bounce back. And I was happy to see, not just him bounce back, but bounce back with some business on his mind,” he continued. “I know he doesn’t want to delve into that. I was listening to him talking about his CBD. And was like ‘I don’t really want to get into that.’ You need to get a hold of that also and start learning that aspect of the game, because the fight game is short, and the game is very forgetful.”

Due to the hand injury, the event was moved to Edmonton, Alberta and when he will fight again is to be seen. He mentions in the interview he wants to return soon and is eyeing a bevy of opponents, but does want to get redemption against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Who do you want to see Conor McGregor return against?

UFC commentator Jon Anik has refuted claims that the commentary team was biased against Cris Cyborg during her UFC 240 win over Felicia Spencer this past weekend.

Despite being unable to finish Spencer, Cyborg dominated the three-round fight to emerge victorious via unanimous decision. However, the commentary team, particularly Rogan, came under criticism for how they called the bout. One example was stating that Cyborg was starting to look tired during the contest.

Cyborg, who has had her feud with UFC president Dana White escalate in recent weeks, recently accused him of influencing the commentary team to biased against her on purpose. Some fans seem to think that is the case as well.

But that is far from the truth according to Anik:

“I have heard the criticism about the commentary in the Cris Cyborg-Felicia Spencer fight and felt the need to address it publicly, as we consider all feedback seriously,” Anik wrote on Instagram. “In this instance, I would respectfully disagree with those who suggest there was any bias or lack of objectivity. We repeatedly gave Cyborg credit or her striking and execution. I even suggested she deserved at 10-8 margin in round 3.

“That said, a big part of the narrative in the fight was Spencer. Sure she lost all three rounds but she deserved credit for her ability to absorb punishment and keep pressing forward, her ability to rise to the occasion in just her eighth pro fight against an all-time great like Cyborg. Many fighters would have crumbled under that Cyborg pressure and she did not. Thus she was given credit on the broadcast.

“But the notion that there is some promotional initiative to push one fighter over another is patently false and absurd. I have called 140-plus shows for the UFC. Never once have I been given a directive like this. Personally, I have always had a great relationship with Cyborg and I hope Cris will read this and understand it is said with 100-percent veracity. I am hopefully she will re-sign with the UFC and get the rematch with Amanda Nunes.”

Only time will tell if Cyborg re-signs with the UFC or decides to get a breath of fresh air by moving to another promotion.

What do you make of Cyborg’s claims that the commentary team was biased?

Cris Cyborg’s deal with the UFC is now expired. The former UFC women’s featherweight champ defeated Felicia Spencer to fulfill the final fight on her previous UFC contract.

If she ultimately decides to leave the UFC and sign with a new promotion, it would be disappointing to not see Cyborg rematch Amanda Nunes before she leaves. The pair first fought back in December at UFC 235, where Nunes walked through Cyborg in under a minute via knockout.

The victory earned “The Lioness” the 145-pound championship. Much back-and-forth between Cyborg and UFC President Dana White was made as to why an immediate rematch didn’t come to fruition. Dana White went as far as saying Cyborg is scared to fight Nunes again, while Cyborg claims she texted White for the rematch immediately after the first fight ended.

At UFC 240 this past weekend, Cyborg was able to confront White on his comments. She documented their face-to-face meeting on her official YouTube channel. Check it out below.

White has said that he’s open to inking Cyborg to a one-fight deal in order to make the rematch happen. However, should Cyborg beat Nunes and regain the championship, there is a championship clause in UFC contracts that would keep Cyborg under contract with the Las Vegas-based promotion.

The situation is certainly an interesting one, and it will be intriguing to see how things play out over the next few months.
