UFC 242 headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov was trending to be a big success, and according to reports, it drew huge numbers in Russia.

Nurmagomedov successfully defended his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier in the event’s headliner this past weekend in Abu Dhabi. It was his first fight since his career-defining win over Conor McGregor last year which made him a true global star.

That stardom was put to the test at UFC 242 and while official numbers are not out yet at least for the United States, the event did extremely well in Russia.

The event was broadcast free-to-view on Russia’s Channel 1 (Perviy Canal) and had as many as 26 million viewers across the channel’s various platforms according to reports (via RT). The headliner also had an audience of 24 percent among adult viewers across Russia according to the data.

If the North American numbers are as good as they were in Russia, one wonders how many eyeballs will be on Nurmagomedov’s next fight, especially if it’s against Tony Ferguson who is on a 12-fight win streak. That seems to be the next outing for “The Eagle” too so hopefully combat sports fans finally see one of the most anticipated matchups in recent memory.

Do you think Nurmagomedov is a solid star yet? Or are you not convinced yet?

Khabib Nurmagomedov is now 28-0 after he successfully defended his middleweight title for the second time at UFC 242. There, he submitted Dustin Poirier in the third round, but the fight was not easy, at least for a moment.

During the fight, Poirier appeared to stun Nurmagomedov, and then, later on, had a tight guillotine choke. For UFC president, Dana White, he was thoroughly impressed that the Russian champion was able to get out of the choke.

“He looked unbelievable,” White said at the post-fight press conference (h/t MMA Junkie). “Incredibly dominant, even though there was some drama in there when he was caught in that guillotine. A lot of people don’t get out of that thing. Khabib is so good he got out.

“Dustin had that thing in deep. Most people would have tapped and went to sleep to that guillotine. Props on him for getting out of that, too. He looked completely dominant tonight.”

With the win, the question of where Khabib Nurmagomedov ranks among the best of all-time is a big one. He is undefeated and has been dominant in all his fights. So, according to White, he is very close to being the GOAT.

“(He’s) pretty special, man,” White said. “I think he’s a couple (of) fights away from potential GOAT status. To go undefeated for this long, for this many fights, especially in a division that’s that stacked, he’s looking down the barrel of a pretty special career.”

As for Khabib Nurmagomedov, he thinks he is the top pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC.

“Give me just respect, ” Nurmagomedov said. “Put me on No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter next week, because I think I deserve this. Because I dominate, with all my opponents. I’m undefeated. I think I deserve some respect.”

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier might be contemplating retirement following his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Poirier suffered a third-round submission defeat to Nurmagomedov in their UFC 242 headliner in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. “The Diamond” was notably disappointed and emotional following the loss as he shed tears in his post-fight interview as well as the post-fight press conference.

And in a recent social media post on Sunday, he even hinted at retirement:

“Thank you guys for the support, it means a lot to me,” Poirier said. “If I choose to fight again, I’ll be back strong. If not, I’ll see what God has in store for me. Thank you.”

It would be a shame if Poirier called it a day as he is still one of the best lightweights in the world and will likely remain at the top of the rankings for a while. There’s also the possibility of moving up to welterweight where he won’t have to deplete himself to compete at the weight limit.

However, at the end of the day, it’s his call.

Do you think Poirier will call it a day? Or do you think he should keep competing as he still has a chance of earning undisputed UFC gold?

Edson Barboza and his team will be appealing his loss to Paul Felder.

Barboza and Felder fought in a back-and-forth rematch in the co-main event of UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. After the final bell, Barboza was celebrating as he felt he had done enough to win on the judges’ scorecards.

One judge even scored the bout 30-27 to the Brazilian. Oddly enough, another scored it 30-27 to Felder while the third scored it 29-28 to give “The Irish Dragon” the split decision victory.

Barboza and his team will now be appealing the loss as they feel the bout was judged inaccurately — highlighted by two scorecards giving all three rounds to each fighter:

“We think that the fight was judged inaccurately,” Barboza’s manager Alex Davis told MMA Fighting. “The fact that one judge gave it 30-27 Junior and one have it 30-27 Felder is a big indicator of their confusion.

Our perception—and to everyone we spoke with, everyone in the arena, every journalist and media—the fight was 29-28 for Junior, who won the first two rounds.”

Barboza Did Enough To Win

Appealing a loss usually never results in anything. And while Davis is fine with Felder winning with a 29-28 scorecard, he feels a 30-27 scorecard for either fighter is something that must be reviewed:

“We can’t let this happen,” Davis added. “These fighters put a lot of effort and invest their time to get up there to do what they do so we have judges making these type of mistakes and not being reviewed.

“We think Junior won two rounds to one, but we wouldn’t complain if it was 29-28 Felder. Nothing against Paul Felder, he’s a great fighter, a great person, his whole team, but I think Junior did a great fight and we’ll contest this.”

How did you score the fight?
