Michael Chandler unsure if Conor McGregor fight takes place at middleweight I'm 50-50 on it

Former lightweight title challenger, Michael Chandler claims the possibility of him facing off with long-time foe, Conor McGregor at the middleweight limit is currently up in the air as far as he is concerned, however, he’s locked in for the possibility of a slated June 29. clash with the UFC star.

Chandler, the current number five ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since he featured at UFC 281 back in November 2022, suffering a third round rear-naked choke submission loss to Dustin Poirier in a rallying performance from the former interim champion.

Coming up on three years away from the Octagon, ex-two-weight champion, McGregor has yet to feature since he fractured his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Poirier at UFC 264 in the pair’s trilogy rubber match.

However, over the course of last weekend, McGregor revealed he would be returning to the Octagon at an earmarked UFC 302 card during International Fight Week next – featuring on June 29. in a middleweight fight against The Ultimate Fighter 31 opposing coach, Chandler.

Michael Chandler confident of fighting Conor McGregor in June

And whilst the promotion have yet to officially comment or confirm the middleweight clash between McGregor and Kill Cliff FC staple, Chandler, the latter remains receptive to a clash at 185 pounds for the first time in his career, however, is not completely sold.

“I have a hundred percent confidence that I’m fighting Conor McGregor on June 29.” Michael Chandler told ESPN recently. “Ultimately, I’m 50-50 on it [a middleweight fight]. And ultimately, it doesn’t matter. I spent five weeks around Conor. I don’t care if he wants to fight at 185 [pounds], 170, 205, whatever it might be. You’ve got to remember: He doesn’t want to fight at 155 because he wants everybody to believe he’s bigger than he is. He, in his mind, can’t fight at 170, because I called him out at 170, therefore he’s doing what I said at 170.”

“So, he has to say 185, just like he did in the intro scene of The Ultimate Fighter telling me it was gonna be at 185,” Michael Chandler continued. “I don’t give a rip about what the weight is. … The UFC and Conor can figure that out and let me know what they’re thinking, and i can have an opinion on it. But as of right now, I couldn’t care less about the weight. The date and the opponent was all that matters.’

UFC Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley shares his thoughts on Conor McGregor’s return potentially taking place at middleweight.

On New Year’s Eve, McGregor recently announced his official return to the Octagon, sharing a classic McGregor-style video. With a glass of red win in hand, McGregor confirmed that he would make his anticipated comeback on June 29.

“Ladies and gentlemen, a happy new year to you all. I’d like to announce the return date for myself, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor, for the greatest comeback of all time. “It will take place in Las Vegas for International Fight Week on June 29th,” McGregor announced.

“And the opponent, Michael Chandler. And the weight, Mr. Chandler… 185 pounds.” (H/T Bloody Elbow)

Sean O’Malley discusses Conor McGregor’s potential 185lb debut

A McGregor fight is always going to dominate all MMA conversations, fuelling discussions on every MMA talk show or podcast. O’Malley would share his thoughts on McGregor’s fight on his podcast TimboSugarShow and claimed that McGregor, who ‘Sugar’ has shared his admiration, can further cement his legacy in the upcoming clash.

“I feel like he might be fiddling,” O’Malley said. “I think he’s just trying to – I don’t know … Chandler probably walks around max 185 (pounds), Conor probably 190-195. But interesting matchup there, 185. If he knocks out Chandler, he’d have a knockout at ’45, knockout at ’55, knockout at ’70, knockout at 185. That would be legendary.” (H/T MMAJunkie)https://www.lowkickmma.com/conor-mcgregor-warned-extra-weight-chandler-ufc/

If McGregor was to score a knockout against Chandler at middleweight, he would be the first fighter to ever score knockout wins over four divisions.

As for O’Malley, the 29-year-old is set to defend his 135lb strap against Marlon Vera in the main event of UFC 299 in March.

Conor McGregor warned away from middleweight fight with Michael Chandler at UFC 302 that extra weight is an issue

Confirming over the course of the weekend that he is poised for a June return to the Octagon at an earmarked UFC 302 event against Michael Chandler in a stunning middleweight division debut for the duo – Conor McGregor has been warned away from a 185 pound leap by Michael Bisping, who points to an extra weight carry bringing with it some cause for concern.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, confirmed his return to the Octagon following a three-year hiatus from the sport through injury before the turn of the year, planning a June comeback.

And revealing plans for a June 29. return – McGregor claimed he was slated to fight Kill Cliff FC staple, Chandler at UFC 302 during an early International Fight Week for the organization – as part of a shocking middleweight limit debut for both fighters.

Conor McGregor warned away from 185 pound leap

However, as far as former divisional champion, Bisping is concerned, McGregor should be wary about the prospect of competing at 185 pounds – having initially entered the UFC fighting at the featherweight limit.

“He (Conor McGregor) fought at 145 [pounds], went up to 155 – 185 that is not his optimal weight class,” Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “Granted, he’s fighting another lightweight in Michael Chandler. The problem is though is that, as I say, it’s not your optimal weight class, so they’re going to be carrying more weight. If you’re Conor – and I’m not hating on Conor and I’m really excited for the fight because he’s the most exciting guy because of the energy and the presence and the hype and the performances.”

“Win or lose – and there’s been losses recently, they’re still big moments and the comeback is going to be something special,” Bisping explained. “It really is, but I think with all that extra weight it’s going to be an issue.”

“I think this is a game, I think Conor McGregor is the puppetmaster, and I think Michael Chandler is being far too easy to play with,” Daniel Cormier said. “At this point, Michael Chander is Pinocchio. Paulo Costa and Conor McGregor

With the news that Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the Octagon would be at middleweight, fighters and fans already doing some fantasy matchmaking for the future.

After literal years of speculation, we now know that the Irishman will make his “greatest comeback in combat sports history” on June 28. On that date, he is expected to headline UFC 302 as part of the promotion’s annual International Fight Week event in Las Vegas. McGregor confirmed that he would square off with ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler, but threw fans a curveball when he added that the bout would take place at 185 pounds.

With McGregor moving up three weight classes from where his UFC career began, there are a lot of intriguing money-matchups to be made. Unsurprisingly, one-time middleweight title challenger Paulo Costa was one of the first to throw his name into the mix for a clash with the new buffed-up version of ‘Mystic Mac.

“I gonna step in replacing chandler,” Costa wrote in response to McGregor’s fight announcement online.

Costa followed that up with another post, saying:

“Costa x Mc Gregor at 185lbs”

Like McGregor, Paulo Costa is expected to make his Octagon return in 2024

Fans have not seen ‘The Eraser’ in action since he won a bizarrely entertaining encounter with former middleweight world champion Luke Rockhold in August 2022. Following the contest, he underwent a lengthy contract negotiation with the UFC. Signing a new deal that reportedly guarantees him upwards of $1 million per fight, Costa has been booked for not one, but two fights that ultimately fell through.

He was first expected to make his Octagon return against Ikram Aliskerov in July, but the fight was canceled after he had accepted a contest with Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294. Two weeks before fight night in Abu Dhabi, Costa revealed that he had undergone elbow surgery due to an infection. With a second surgery necessary, Costa was forced out of the bout altogether.

He is now scheduled to square off with perennial contender and former 185-pound king Robert Whittaker at UFC 298 in February.
