The medical suspensions for UFC Fight Island 2 have been released and unsurprisingly, Luana Carolina will be out for a while.

Carolina was the victim of a brutal kneebar submission from Ariane Lipski in their women’s flyweight main card encounter this past weekend. She notably needed assistance walking back from the Octagon after the fight.

As a result, she will now be sidelined from competing for six months unless she can provide a clean MRI on her left knee.

Meanwhile, Joseph Benavidez will be out for 45 days with no contact for 30 days after getting knocked down three times en route to a first-round submission defeat to Deiveson Figueiredo in their flyweight title headliner.

Deiveson Figueiredo seems to appreciate just how brutal his win over Joseph Benavidez was.

Figueiredo became the new flyweight champion following one of the most one-sided title fights in history at UFC Fight Island 2 this past weekend.

The Brazilian dropped Benavidez three times en route to sinking in the rear naked choke submission that put the bloodied challenger to sleep.

Figueiredo: Benavidez’s Soul Wasn’t In His Body Anymore

Once he knocked Benavidez down the first time, Figueiredo knew exactly how the fight would play out.

“I knew that when I got the first knockdown he’d lose conscience of what was happening inside the cage and I’d be able to do whatever I wanted with him,” Figueiredo told MMA Fighting. “And it happened. I knocked him down three times.

“His soul wasn’t in his body anymore. And then I took what was left and closed the casket.”

It was a big blow for Benavidez who is now 0-4 in title fights and would suffer his second loss to Figueiredo in the process. However, he doesn’t plan on going out that way as he detailed in the post-fight presser.

“I’m not going out like that,” he added. “Nothing’s guaranteed in this sport for sure, but I’m not going to get another title shot and I don’t want to go out on that, so I just want to go out with another fight and after that, there’s nothing else for me to do.

“I’m not going to beat 10 guys again. I know that was my last title shot. Like I said, I don’t want to go out on that.”

Joseph Benavidez is taking his latest loss like a champion.

Benavidez failed once again in his quest to become UFC flyweight champion after getting submitted by Deiveson Figueiredo in their Fight Island 2 headliner on Saturday night.

Unlike his previous attempts, however, this was completely one-sided. Benavidez was notably dropped multiple times en route to his submission defeat in what was a brutal affair overall.

However, he remains grateful not only for the opportunity he had to run things back with Figueiredo, but also for life itself.

“To do this and to be able to do this is a blessing in itself and that’s just on the fight side, I’m grateful for the opportunity,” an emotional Benavidez said at the post-fight press conference. “… I looked at my wife. I was so grateful for that. Nothing can be bad at the end of the day. Going home and having someone that makes you feel like the best every day.

“I sit here humbled, impressed by him and grateful I got the opportunity to go out there and display what I prepared for… Life comes at you fast, man.”

Benavidez Doesn’t Want To Go Out Like That

That said, Benavidez isn’t done with the sport yet.

After four cracks at UFC gold, he acknowledges he will more than likely not get another title shot again. But one thing is for sure — he isn’t going out like that and hopes to have a different ending in what could be one last fight.

What do you think of Benavidez’s response? Do you think he should keep fighting? Move up? Or just call it a day after having one more fight?

Gastelum

Kelvin Gastelum was understandably devastated at his most recent setback.

Coming off a two-fight losing streak, Gastelum was looking to return with a bang against Jack Hermansson in the co-main event of UFC Fight Island 2 on Saturday night.

However, it wasn’t to be as he was quickly submitted by Hermansson who locked in a heel hook to get the first-round victory.

As a result, Gastelum now finds himself on a three-fight losing streak and at risk of dropping even further down the middleweight rankings. He didn’t take long to take to social media and put out a statement.

“Truly embarrassed guys. I’m sorry. My team, my family @UFC @danawhite @Mickmaynard2 You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so u can know who u are, what u can rise from, how u can still come out of it.”

Given that Gastelum is one of the most exciting fighters in the promotion, even a three-fight losing streak shouldn’t worry him, at least when it comes to remaining with the UFC.

However, there should definitely be cause for concern, especially after his last two performances now.
