Sunday afternoon, an unexpectedly pleasant time for a bit of the old violence for MMA fans. UFC Fight Night 113 from the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, turned out to be an extremely exciting, fun card that featured several breakout performances.

From a shocking main event finish to a never-before-seen front face slam knockout, Glasgow delivered on a number of crucial fronts.

Take a look at our five biggest takeaways from Sunday’s event!

Per Haljestam for USA TODAY Sports

5. Welcome To The UFC, Galore Bofando

You couldn’t ask for a better UFC debut than Galore Bofanfo’s.

The unknown welterweight burst into the big leagues with a stunning face-plant slam KO over Charlie Ward.

The finish is truly one of a kind, and no other slam knockout has ever played-out like that. Bofando seemed to just toss Ward like a child on to the ground facefirst, and did so with enough force to knock him unconscious.

The knockout was without a doubt one to remember from a very promising welterweight prospect, however Ward’s durability has to be called into question after Sunday. Having been knocked out in his UFC debut in less than a minute prior to this fight, Ward may be better suited for other promotions, lest he risk more of these brutal knockout losses.

Little known fact here: Ward is actually the fighter who essentially beat Portuguese mixed martial artist Joao Carvalho at show in Ireland in 2015, where Conor McGregor was sitting cage side in support of his SBG teammate.

Santiago Ponzinibbio Calls Out Carlos Condit After Nelson Knockout

UFC Fight Night 113 took place yesterday (July 17, 2017) from Glasgow, Scotland, and rising welterweight contender Santiago Ponzinibbio made a statement in the main event, brutally knocking out Gunnar Nelson in under two minutes.

After the fight, however, Nelson cited an eye poke as the reason for the loss, although Ponzinibbio says he ‘didn’t see it’ take place:

“I went there to knock him out and thank God it went as expected, I won by knockout,” Ponzinibbio told MMAFighting.com. “If (the eye poke) happened, of course it wasn’t intentional, but I watched the video again and didn’t see it. I don’t know. But it was a knockout with the right hand that I landed on him. The right hand hurt him and I finished with a precise jab.”

Continuing on, Ponzinibbio said that Nelson’s claims don’t take anything away from his emphatic knockout victory:

“It doesn’t take anything away from the win,” Ponzinibbio said. “What he says doesn’t change anything. There’s a referee inside the Octagon looking at it, and he can stop the fight any time he wants. The No. 8 in the world lasted 82 seconds. He’s 28, he’s versatile, a great athlete, one of the best in the division, has a bright future in the UFC, will be at the top, but it was an excellent win. (He) lasted 82 seconds.

“I was well trained, the distance, connected heavy hands,” he added. “I don’t think it takes anything away from the win. He can say whatever he wants. A beautiful knockout for my career, another one in the first round. It’s my fourth first-round knockout (in the UFC). I’m happy.”

As far as what’s next for the American Top Team based fighter, Ponzinibbio expressed interest in facing off with names such as Neil Magny and Carlos Condit:

“Magny. I want Magny. If it can’t be him, I want Condit, but I really want Magny,” Ponzinibbio said. “He needs a fight, he hasn’t fought in a while, so bring Magny. That would be a great fight, a good match-up.”

Magny is coming off of a victory over former champion Johny Hendricks, while Condit is coming off of back-to-back losses.

Who would you like to see Ponzinibbio fight next?

Gunnar Nelson looked every bit of his No. 8-rank welterweight status in the first minute of his main event scrap with Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC Fight Night: Glasgow.

Twenty seconds later, however, he was knocked out cold in the very first stoppage loss of his career due to strikes.

Nelson says that an eye poke by Ponzinibbio led to the knockout just seconds later. Here’s how the fan favorite Icelander Nelson addressed his first knockout loss at the UFC Fight Night Glasgow post-fight press conference:

“I don’t like to make excuses, but this is the truth, how I feel anyway, is I should have stopped the fight when I got poked,” Nelson said following the fight. “I should have stopped it then because I’m seeing two Ponzinibbios in front of me. And that was like that until I remember standing up and the fight was over.”

“I should have stopped it then and I’m not saying, like, he did a good job and maybe it would have happened anyway,” Nelson said. “Maybe my reflexes just wouldn’t have been enough to move away from the punch, but this is how I felt, like, I’m kind of kicking myself in the head for not just stopping the fight and being greedy, because I caught him and I thought he was on the run.”

Although the fight ended only 80 seconds into round one, Gunnar landed several big shots, even rocking Ponzinibbio with a huge uppercut and landing some sharp punches and a low kick prior to the finish.

Nelson insists he should have alerted the referee about the eye poke and stopped the fight to recover from it.

“I should have stopped it then and I’m not saying, like, he did a good job and maybe it would have happened anyway,” he said. “Maybe my reflexes just wouldn’t have been enough to move away from the punch, but this is how I felt, like, I’m kind of kicking myself in the head for not just stopping the fight and being greedy, because I caught him and I thought he was on the run.”

“I should have just stopped the fight, recovered my eye, and carried on from there,” Nelson said. “But I didn’t, and here we are now. You win or you learn, and I’ll definitely learn from this.”

In the co-main event of UFC Fight Night Glasgow earlier today (Sun. July 16, 2017), No. 8-ranked strawweight Joanne Calderwood went head-to-head with rising star and No. 14-ranked Cynthia Calvillo.

The bout was initially scheduled to take place at the pair’s home-class of 115 pounds, however, Calderwood missed weight by three pounds and the contest was instead held at the catchweight of 118 pounds. Calderwood recently had a two-fight win streak snapped when she was submitted by Jessica Andrade at UFC 203 last September, and was looking to get back on the winning side of things against Calvillo.

Calvillo came into the bout undefeated in her mixed martial arts (MMA) career, with all but one of those five victories coming by way of finish. Since making her UFC debut back in March, Calvillo has finished both her bouts inside the Octagon via rear-naked choke. She looked to continue that win streak against “JoJo” tonight.

Throughout the contest both women were able to land their respective shots, and although it was Calderwood who remained the busiest, Calvillo seemed to be the more accurate when she did throw. When the fight found its way to the ground, however, it was a completely different story.

The Team Alpha Male product completely dominated the ground game and had Calderwood in trouble on multiple occasions as it pertains to submission attempts. The fight, in fact, ended with Calderwood stuck in a rear-naked choke, however, she was saved by the bell and did not tap.
