Real Talk

Another great UFC card has come and gone, and as usual I will be the killjoy to send you crashing back to reality from the high heights  of last weekend’s events. Today’s candidate will be Derek “The Black Beast” Lewis after his heroic performance against Travis Browne at UFC Halifax.

Although Lewis displayed heart as well as KO power to end Travis Browne in the second round, he didn’t exactly look great up to that point. Don’t get me wrong, Travis Browne is a world class athlete and uses that athleticism to separate him from his large bellied counterparts, but his achilles heel is getting backed up against the cage and clipped, to a certain degree there’s a formula with this guy. With that being said he was still seconds away from potentially ending that fight. A situation I’m not sure Lewis would’ve survived against an opponent with a not so hot button chin.

The problem with Lewis is that he looks like a basic one dimensional fighter. I get it, his ground game is underrated and he moves deceptively well for a big fella, but you can say the same about Roy Nelson. His body is left wide open and he has an aggressive move forward style that i believe only works when you get to a certain level of competition. He relies on his strength and size but that will only get you so far when you’re going against the best of the best. Do Santos, Miocic, Werdum, Ben Rothwell,  Alistair Overeem, these guys are skilled to the tits. I just don’t see Lewis getting to the top in his current form. Speaking of form, he may also have to drop a few pounds to keep his questionable cardio up. This is a catch 22 because he uses a lot of that weight to pressure his opponents. According to Joe Rogan he can balloon up to 280 lbs after weight-ins,  but that information is unconfirmed.

As contrary as it sounds, I really do like Derrick Lewis and hope he can be heavyweight champion one day. But if you’re asking for an honest opinion, I see him as a bridesmaid.

What do you guys think of the “Black Beast”, is he just getting started?

Derrick Lewis Mentions Ronda Rousey In Bizarre Post-Fight Interview

Derrick Lewis made quite the statement with his second round knockout win over Travis Browne in the main event of last night’s (Sun. Derrick Lewis made quite the statement with his second round knockout win over Travis Browne in the main event of last night’s (Sun. February 19, 2017) UFC Halifax card, but not quite as big a statement as he made in his post-fight interview.

The No. 8-ranked heavyweight struggled in the early part of his bout with ‘Hapa’ after eating a few nasty body shots that visibly hurt ‘The Black Beast.’ Lewis was able to rally, however, and utilized the power that is feared amongst his peers at heavyweight to stifle Browne.

After establishing full mount and unloading a barrage of harsh ground-and-pound, Lewis earned the biggest win of his fighting career.

Leading up to the contest Lewis made the bout personal by bringing up Browne’s history with domestic abuse, and took yet another shot at him during his post-fight interview with Brian Stann by mentioning his current girlfriend and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey:

“I had a bigger heart than him. He calls himself a man but he likes to put his hands on women, so forget that guy. I have much more heart than he has. Where Ronda Rousey’s fine ass at?”

Looks like ‘The Black Beast’ wants him some of ‘The Rowdy One.’ What are your thoughts on Lewis’ post-fight comments? Did the rising heavyweight star go too far?

In our co-main event from last night’s (Sun. February 19, 2017) UFC Halifax event, former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks takes on former world Judo champion Hector Lombard.

Both men came into the contest on a losing skid; as Hendricks suffered three-straight defeats in his former championship weight class (missing weight for two), and Lombard came in off two back-to-back knockout losses.

The first round saw a bit of a patient striking battle to kick things off, before Hendricks slipped and Lombard immediately jumped on him to get the back clinch. The Cuban attempted to grind away at ‘Bigg Rig’ but failed to get the fight to the ground. Hendricks was able to separate and the two ended the first round without either man really landing anything significant.

A jab to the nose and body kick landed for Lombard to open the second round, and he followed that up with a nice left hook and a takedown attempt. Lombard kneed Hendricks a little bit too down south in the clinch and the ref put a stop to the action.

Hendricks got rocked after a few big shots from Lombard after we returned from a brief break in action. Lombard was continuously stuffed on his takedown attempts but was repeatedly landing some big shots to the former 170-pound champion’s chin. Hendricks answered back with a few nice knees to end the round.

Lombard opened up the final round with a huge overhand right that Hendricks was able to push through from. Hendricks landed another big knee to the Cuban’s face after a takedown attempt, but was met with another big shot that wobbled him in return. Lombard is able to take Hendricks down but is slipped off rather easily after taking the back due to all the sweat on both men’s body.

The round ended with the two exchanging leg kicks and the judges awarded the contest to Hendricks via unanimous decision.

Fan-favorite Elias Theodorou takes on Cezar Ferreira next in what should be an exciting middleweight contest.

Theodorou comes off of a unanimous decision win over Sam Alvey after suffering his first career loss against Thiago Santos in December of 2015. Ferreira is currently on quite the three-fight hot streak with wins over Oluwale Bamgbose, Anthony Smith, and Jack Hermansson.

Round One:

‘The Spartan’ opens up by pushing the action but doesn’t really land anything clean. Theodorou comes in with a body kick and eats a right hook as he comes in. He tries to land a head-kick a few times but Ferreira is just out of his range each attempt.

Theodorou connects with a low kick followed by a nice body kick but again begins to struggle with finding his range. The two exchange leg kicks and Ferreira lands two nice counter shots to Theodorou’s chin on his way inside.

A frustrated ‘Spartan’ attempts a takedown now but is unsuccessful as Ferreira is able to separate. Theodorou comes in on another overhand right but eats a big counter strike from Ferreira yet again. The Brazilian ends the round with another big counter punch and seemed to take that round.

Round Two:

Again Theodorou opens up the round with some pressure and lands a nice jab-cross. Ferreira comes in on a takedown but ‘The Spartan’ separates. A flying knee attempt ends up with a scramble and Ferreira taking Theodorou’s back.

Another great scramble and Theodorou finds himself on his feet again and pressuring Ferreira against the cage. Ferreira then pulls out a strong takedown and attempt to take ‘The Spartan’s’ back once again but is unsuccessful. The two are striking again and Ferreira slips and pays for it with a Theodorou takedown.

Theodorou throws down some shots before Ferreira pops back up but pulls guard with a deep guillotine. The choke is very deep but Theodorou is able to slip out of it. More ground-and-pound from ‘The Spartan’ now and Ferreira eventually finds himself up again.

Both men are sucking in a lot of air after their ground war and are slow to pull the trigger on anything big now. Ferreira lands a big low kick and Theodorou responds with a big overhand to end the round. With his ground dominance, ‘The Spartan’ may have taken that one on the judges’ scorecards.

Round Three:

The final round opens up with a nice head-kick from ‘The Spartan’ who follows that up with a leg kick. Another big leg kick from Theodorou who puts another big right hand behind it.

A takedown attempt from Ferreira fails to go anywhere but both men soon go in for a takedown at the same time and collide. They separate and continue to coast through the round.

Theodorou toes in on a high-kick but is taken down by Ferreira who takes his back and goes for the rear-naked choke. The Brazilian cranks hard on the face but ‘The Spartan’ continues to fight back hard and manages to break his grip. Theodorou gets back up, goes for a takedown, but the Brazilian miraculously lands on his feet.

Another takedown attempt from Ferreira but ‘The Spartan’ stuffs it to end the round. The native-son Theodorou is confident he’s won the contest after the final horn, and the judges agree with him.

Official Decision:

Elias Theodorou def. Cezar Ferreira via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
