Despite a lackluster fight, Ronaldo Souza was proud of his effort against Jan Blachowicz largely due to his condition leading up to the bout.

Souza made his light heavyweight debut on Saturday against Blachowicz in the UFC Sao Paulo headliner. However, it was a dull and uneventful affair with very little action.

In the end, Blachowicz came away with the split decision victory as “Jacare” put in an underwhelming performance. However, considering he was ill leading up to the event, he believes he did his best given the situation:

“I told the UFC I was coughing in a way that I can’t stop coughing, and this was 20 days ago,” Souza said through an interpreter (via MMA Junkie). “We did a lot of exams and, first of all, I did treatment as if there was an allergy, and my doctor from Brazil here told (to do) a weird exam. … So 10 days ago was when I was diagnosed and on Monday was my last day taking antibiotics. I was going to give an interview, and when I did interviews I would start coughing and people would say, ‘What’s wrong?’ And I would say, ‘Nothing.’

“It didn’t get in my way. I was able to fight five rounds against a guy who was knocking everyone out in the light heavyweight division. I did my best to be here to fight. Unfortunately the victory didn’t come my way. It wasn’t a pretty fight. It wasn’t pretty for me, it wasn’t pretty for him, but I thought I won three rounds.”

Despite two losses in a row as well as four in his last six, Souza believes he can take many positives from the setback — even though he thinks he should have won:

“I fought well against a top-level guy,” Souza added.” He was knocking everyone out. I was able to use my strength and put him against the fence. He said that. I wasn’t able to impose my game and take him down. I tried to stop to attack in the fourth round because he hurt my leg, so that got in my way.

“… I’m going to be strengthened by this. It’s my first fight at light heavyweight, and I fought a guy who’s at the top, a guy who just knocked out a former champion in Luke Rockhold, and I went in there and did five rounds, and I won, but unfortunately I didn’t take it.”

What do you make of Souza’s thoughts?

UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones for many, is the greatest fighter of all time. He has essentially never lost a fight other than his disqualification against Matt Hamill.

Given his superiority to all of his past foes, it’s hard to see him being scared or worried by any one particular opponent. Jones would confirm the same when asked by a fan.

However, he did reveal that he had nightmares leading up to his title defense against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson back in 2011:

“I wasn’t necessarily worried but I did have a few nightmares leading up to the rampage Jackson fight,” he said on Twitter.

Jones even revealed those nightmares were what led to his iconic crawls at the start of his fights:

“In my nightmare I always started standing so to make sure that dream didn’t come true. I decided to crawl,” he added.

Of course, Jones ended up submitting Jackson in the fourth round of their title fight. And “Bones” is still going strong today as he remains the light heavyweight king, having most recently defended his title against Thiago Santos in a split decision victory.

The undefeated Dominick Reyes seems to be next in line for Jones — will there be any new nightmares or just another routine day at the office?

UFC Hall of Famer and Valor founder Ken Shamrock has laid out the invitation for Jorge Masvidal to compete in bare knuckle action.

Shamrock created a stir recently when he mocked the BMF title fight between Masvidal and Nate Diaz at UFC 244. He felt compared to what he and other UFC veterans had to go through in the nineties, a BMF title meant next to nothing.

However, he meant no disrespect to either competitor as he expanded on those comments:

“I’m not taking anything from them, because all these guys would whip my butt right now,” Shamrock told MMA Fighting. “All I’m saying is compared to what we had to go through, getting kicked in the face, punched in the back of the head with no gloves, no rules, no time limit, four times in one night, yes, it’s funny.”

Shamrock doesn’t believe there’s a need for a belt to signify how much of a BMF someone is. He even proceeded to invite Masvidal to return to his bare knuckle roots by competing at Valor:

“I don’t think we need a belt to tell people there’s a ‘BMF’ – I don’t understand that,” Shamrock added. “Masvidal fought bare-knuckle. He did backyard brawls just like (Kimbo Slice).

“So I say if that’s the case, why doesn’t he try his hand at Valor? We’d love to find out how bad he is.”

Of course, Masvidal is contracted to the UFC so that is highly unlikely as of now. But maybe it’s an option for the future?

What do you think of Shamrock’s comments and invitation?

UFC light heavyweight contender Jan Blachowicz showed that he could take a joke.

Blachowicz collided with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the main event of UFC Sao Paulo on Saturday night. Although the Pole won the contest via split decision, it was an extremely dull and uneventful affair with many fans complaining.

Fighters weren’t impressed either as UFC middleweight Derek Brunson poked fun at the main event by stating that it put his baby to sleep:

“Y’all mad , im happy . Jan and Jacare put my baby to sleep, thanks fellaz . I feel like I need to pay a babysitter’s fee ??? #UFCSP” he wrote on Twitter.

Blachowicz would respond soon after:

“Everything for kids, man ?” he replied.

Brunson replied giving Blachowicz props for his performance:

“A lot of strategy and jocking for position there. Good job leaving a lasting impression. Congrats!” he wrote.

Despite the nature of the main event, Blachowicz has now won six of his last seven and is right in the mix for title contention.

However, with Dominick Reyes seemingly next in line for current champion Jon Jones, Blachowicz will either have to wait for the winner or take a potential fight with Corey Anderson next.

What did you think of the fight and Brunson’s tweet?
