Anthony Pettis Claims ‘I’m About To Tear Up’ UFC Welterweight Division

Former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis is feeling amazing heading into his main event showdown with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. “I just tell my fiance. Former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis is feeling amazing heading into his main event showdown with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.

“I just tell my fiance. I was looking in the mirror, I was like, ‘How did you let me make 145 (pounds)?’ Pettis told MMA Junkie on Wednesday (March 20, 2019). “Crazy.”

Pettis missed weight the last time he competed at 145 pounds. That was for a interim title vs. Max Holloway in 2016. Now, “Showtime” is ready to tackle his third division since joining the UFC. And it starts with Thompson in the main event at UFC on ESPN+ 6 headliner at the Bridgestone Arena.

“This time I feel like I got ready for a fight, not a weight cut,” Pettis said. “So I feel amazing.”

However, that is not the way Pettis felt in his last fight against Tony Ferguson at last October’s UFC 229. “Showtime” would lose that fight due to doctor stoppage caused by a broken hand. But moreover, Pettis had already begun to feel the effects of a “bad” weight cut in the fight. They were factors in his decision to jump divisions.

Couple that with the bottleneck at the top of the lightweight division due to champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s suspension and, well, the decision was easy for “Showtime.”

“Top 10, I pretty much fought them all,” Pettis said. “Time for a new division, new set of faces. There are some good fights for me. …

“I’m about to tear it up. I just feel so good.”

Former UFC Champ Trashes Bisping’s HOF Induction, Takes Aim At Dana White

“I can’t help but laugh when I see stuff like this,” Sylvia wrote in response to a Big John McCarthy tweet. “When Frank Shamrock, Jens Pulver, and myself are all out here like WTF, really?”

Through the years, Syliva has had a contentious relationship with White. That ended in his release after losing to Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81 in 2008.

Still, Sylvia insists that the HOF is nothing more than a ‘popularity contest’ filled with a bunch of ‘yes’ men and women.

“Everyone knows Dana is a d-ck,” Sylvia said. “UFC HOF is a popularity contest on who kisses Dana’s ass and is a ‘yes sir’ to him. I never took his sh-t and never will. If I could get him in a gym with me I would slap his teeth down his throat. For me and all the other fighters.”

Stephen Thompson unsuccessfully challenged for the UFC welterweight championship twice during Tyron Woodley’s reign.

Now, with Kamaru Usman sitting on the 170-pound throne, “Wonderboy” believes this plays into his favor (via MMA Junkie):

“Having a new champion, I knew it was going to be better for my career,” Thompson said. “Nobody wants to see Thompson vs. Woodley 3, and I kind of understood that. I would have to have two or three more fights before I even get that shot again. This, now that we’ve got a new champion, is going to be a faster way up.

“The division has changed dramatically since the last time I fought. Got a new champion, Darren Till got knocked out by a guy that I’ve already beat. It’s up in the air. I’m ranked No. 4 right now, so any one of us could be fighting for that title again.”

Usman dethroned Woodley via lopsided unanimous decision in the co-main event of UFC 235 earlier this month. Now, he’s expected to make his first title defense against Colby Covington next. As for Thompson, he’ll have to string together a few impressive performances before getting another title opportunity.

He’ll main event UFC Nashville this weekend (Sat. March 23, 2019) against ex-lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis. Pettis will be able to match Thompson’s dynamic striking ability, making this a fun match-up for the Tennessee crowd.
