Despite producing less than stellar ratings, at least compared to previous UFC on FOX cards, UFC on FOX 21, which went down this past weekend (August 27, 2016) from Vancouver, Canada featured some pivotal fights and some big winners.

In the main event, longtime veteran Demian Maia once again showcased his world class jiu-jitsu skills by submitting former title challenger Carlos Condit in the very first round. After his latest victory, Maia now sits at No. 3 in the 170-pound division and is closing in on a shot at gold.

Also on the main card, former lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis made his featherweight debut, and he wasted little time, submitting previously top 10-ranked Charles Oliveira in the opening frame. “Showtime” is now ranked at No. 6 in the 145-pound division.

While UFC on FOX 21 had some great action, the event did not draw in the ratings. The weigh-ins did 74,000 viewers on FOX Sports 1 on Friday night. The prelims did 1,122,000 and the main card drew 1,983,000 viewers, which is a record low for UFC events on big FOX. The post-fight show on FS1 averaged 222,000 viewers.

UFC on FOX 21 took place on Saturday, August 27th, at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. The early prelims aired on UFC Fight Pass at 4 p.m. ET while the other prelims aired on FOX at 6 p.m. ET. The four-bout main card aired on FOX at 8 p.m. ET.

The main event of this event was a welterweight clash between Carlos Condit and Demian Maia while the co-main event was a featherweight bout between Charles Oliveira and Anthony Pettis. Rounding out the card was Bec Rawlings vs. Paige VanZant in a women’s strawweight bout and Joe Lauzon vs. Jim Miller in a lightweight bout.

The previous low for UFC events on big FOX was 2.04 million viewers on July 2013, an event headlined by a Demetrious Johnson’s flyweight title bout with John Moraga. To the UFC’s credit, they went up against stiff competition (NFL Pre-Season games).

The UFC returns to this weekend but not on network TV as UFC Fight Night 93 will air on the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

After being choked out by submission wizard Demian Maia in the main event of Saturday’s UFC On FOX 21 event in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, former UFC title contender Carlos Condit spoke about the possibility of no longer being a top-level fighter in the UFC.

At the official post-fight press conference held after the event, “The Natural Born Killer” spoke about his performance and while doing so, was pretty hard on himself. At the same time, there are those who feel that Condit wasn’t being overly hard on himself as much as he was simply speaking the truth as he saw it.

“I don’t know if I have any business fighting at this level anymore,” Condit said at the UFC on FOX 21 post-fight presser. “I’ve been at this for a really long time and the pressure of kind of being one of the top guys for almost a decade, it’s been awesome. I’ve loved being involved in this sport for the time that I have, and I’ve gotten to do what I love for a living for a long period of time.”

On the subject of his future, Condit concluded by saying he doesn’t know if he “belongs here anymore.”

“But, I don’t know, man,” Condit said. “I don’t know if I belong here anymore. We’ll see.”

Demian Maia: I Just Beat The Guy Who Should’ve Been Champ

One week after the record-breaking UFC 202 pay-per-view where Conor McGregor outlasted Nate Diaz in a back-and-forth war, Demian Maia made a thunderous statement with a sub-two-minute submission win over Carlos Condit (watch full highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., August 27, 2016) UFC on FOX 21 from Vancouver, although it may not have drummed up much attention.

Maia’s style, as perhaps the finest Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner in MMA today, has never been the most fan-friendly. He’s often been known to smother opponents in the early-going of bouts only to gas out later while still maintaining an irreversible top control due to the massive gap in skill he possesses over even most elite MMA fighters on the ground.

USATSI_9503591_168382968_lowres

But that shouldn’t matter at all, because Maia has won six straight fights in arguably the most competitive and deep division in the UFC. Since returning to his roots of jiu-jitsu following his failed title bid at middleweight where he inexplicably got away from his most natural skillset in an attempt to out-strike his opponents, Maia has never looked more at home. That has him on the cusp of another title shot, this time at 170 pounds versus new champion Tyron Woodley, yet that’s been promised to No. 2 contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.

Speaking up at the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show following his statement victory over Condit, Maia said he could see why the UFC may pass Thompson over for him due to his age. If that ends up not the case, then Maia just hopes they sign Woodley vs. “Wonderboy” soon:

“I think so. I respect very much Thompson, he’s a great guy. Of course, I’m much older than him so if they could give it to me first, that would be great.

“If not, I hope they give (it) to him really fast and they decide and I wait to see who wins the fight.”

Maia knows that realistically, however, the fight is most likely going to go to Thompson after UFC President Dana White recently made it clear that Woodley wouldn’t get the “money fights” he wanted with Georges St-Pierre or Nick Diaz that he called out for when he snubbed Thompson mere minutes after winning the belt with a title-clinching first round knockout over Robbie Lawler in the main event of July 30’s UFC 201.

With that being the direction the promotion will probably take, Maia said he’s willing to wait for the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson, because he feels like in Condit, he just beat the man who should have been champion based on his controversial split decision loss to Lawler at January 2’s UFC 195:

“I’ll wait. I can stay active in training and doing my teaching, doing what I do everyday. The guy I fought today is not just a former champion, but he is also a guy that many people including me and I was watching Octagon-side his fight against (Robbie) Lawler and many people including me thought he won and he was supposed to be the champ.

“So what else should I do? I have six wins in a row and that’s it.”

Prior to last night’s (Sat., August 27, 2016) UFC on FOX 21 from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony ‘Showtime’s Pettis’ ornately tattooed back was up against the wall, and in no small manner.

In 2015, Pettis was one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport – and also one of its most marketable figures – following two finishes over Benson Henderson and Gilbert Melendez, who were then thought to be the cream of the talented lightweight crop. But as the fight game has been known to do, Pettis was somewhat exposed in his next three bouts, all three losses to Rafael dos Anjos, Eddie Alvarez, and Edson Barboza.

pettis

Dos Anjos and, to a lesser extent, Alvarez, found that implementing a pressure-heavy wrestling game left ‘Showtime’ no space to unleash his fancy finishing moves, and he was then, his confidence potentially reeling, simply outstruck by quite possibly the best pure kickboxer at 155 pounds in Edson Barboza. The surprising downswing lead Pettis to reinvent himself in two ways; the first being switching his camp up a bit by attending Albuquerque’s Jackson-Wink Academy part-time, the second a decision to cut down to 145 pounds, a weight class Pettis has long been rumored to compete in.

He was scheduled to meet current interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the main event of August 2013’s UFC 163, but a knee injury, which some deemed auspicious given that ‘Showtime’ fought and submitted Henderson exactly four weeks later at UFC 164, saw the dream match called off. But that was when he was in prime bargaining position as one of MMA’s most coveted future stars; his move down to featherweight last night was now out of necessity.

And he was given no easy welcome mat to the featherweight arena; no, he was immediately matched against ultra-tricky Brazilian jiu-jitsu whiz Charles Oliveira, a competitor who had submitted four out of his previous six opponents. “Showtime” found a home for his vicious kicks early as many expected (highlights here), bludgeoning “Do Bronx” with his trademark body work to drop the Brazilian early on and dangerously follow with punches on the ground. While he was no doubt playing with fire, Pettis later said he punched Oliveira unconscious and the strikes that followed woke him up.

USATSI_9503421_168382968_lowres

But it was how Pettis responded to that adversity that proves he may be a contender at 145 pounds. “Do Bronx” came back in a big way in the second round, hitting Pettis with varied Muay Thai strikes and taking his back on several occasions. Pettis showed jaw-dropping poise when put in bad positions in his opponent’s glaring strong point, surviving dire positions from a fighter who is one of the more lethal submission threats in the sport.

Turning the tables on more than one occasion, Pettis scored a crucial statement win with a third round guillotine, ironically the move that Oliveira had secured his last two wins with. “Showtime” had finally won a dogfight, and he dug deep to persevere despite admitting he was tired from throwing heavy punches in the first. The performance was indicative of a champion’s heart, something that was clearly lacking in his recent downswing at lightweight, and he did it versus the No. 6-ranked competitor.

USATSI_9503413_168382968_lowres (1)

“Showtime” is back in the mix in a new division, and indeed there are some huge fights available. That’s not to say he’ll be unstoppable, because he won’t – Oliveira took him down much easier as he got tired in the late second and third rounds, but truly blockbuster bouts with fighters like Conor McGregor, Aldo, and Max Holloway would be just what Pettis needs to start “Showtime” back up again.

Of course Pettis will have to continue to shore up the deficiencies in his game, namely wrestling an dealing with pressure, yet there could be man better for helping him do that than Greg Jackson. But the fact that he submitted a top contender known for well, submitting everyone else, bodes well for his future at 145 overall.

He’ll probably always have a problem with the most accomplished wrestlers, but luckily for him, the top three of his new home (excluding a match-up against Frankie Edgar) is populated with big names who are predominantly strikers. Pettis could find himself in a fight with Cub Swanson before he is granted a bout against one of the top three, especially while the muddy featherweight title scene is sorted out.

No matter what fight Pettis gets next, however, the future is bright for him at 145 pounds. Who do you think he should fight next?
