Junior Tafa

Junior Tafa was none-too-happy with the referee’s decision to stop his UFC 305 featured prelim bout against heavyweight prospect Valter Walker.

Tafa appeared to have the advantage on the feet, landing a nice fight hand on Walker early on. That prompted ‘The Clean Monster’ to get his grappling game started, working Tafa against the fence and eventually taking him down to the mat. During an exchange in the closing seconds of the opening round, Walker managed to grab ahold of Tafa’s leg and cinch in a heel hook.

Tafa rolled in defense while simultaneously letting out a very audible scream. That prompted the referee to step in and call for the stoppage despite Tafa never verbally or physically tapping out.

As the commentators attempted to make sense of what happened, Tafa launched his mouthguard across the Octagon and got in Walker’s face. Tafa landed a slap on Walker as security stepped in and separated them.

Serghei Spivac taps out Marcin Tybura

Serghei Spivac made it an early night inside The APEX, scoring a big first-round submission victory over Marcin Tybura in the UFC Vegas 95 headliner.

Things got started early with Spivac landing a nice right hand. Tybura fired back with a calf kick prompting Spivac to shoot in and secure a quick takedown against the fence. Spivac attempted to take Tybura’s back but failed to do so. That allowed Tybura to reverse position and put Spivac on his back.

From the bottom, Spivac snatched Tybura’s arm and locked in a slick armbar that forced Tybura to verbally tap out before they’d even reached the halfway point of the round.

Chepe Mariscal dominates Damon Jackson in frenetic Co-Main event clash - UFC Vegas 95 Highlights

Chepe Mariscal scored his seventh-straight win on Saturday night inside The APEX.

Things got off to a fast start with both fighters meeting in the middle of the Octagon and immediately jockeying for position. Jackson landed some solid knees in the clinch and controlled much of the action up against the fence, but Mariscal landed some solid blows while dirty boxing. Before long, both fighters were shedding blood. Mariscal moreso due to a clash of heads in the opening round.

Things picked up right where they left off in the first, but a low blow to Mariscal brought a brief pause in the action. Mariscal managed to trip up Jackson halfway through the round and landed some big ground-and-pound strikes as Jackson desperately tried to scramble. Jackson made it through the round, but absorbed well over 70 strikes on the ground from Mariscal in the process.

Despite the beating he took in the second stanza, Jackson looked fresh, but it didn’t take long for Mariscal to complete a double leg, putting Jackson on the man less than 90 seconds into the scrap. However, Jackson quickly reversed things and briefly took Mariscal’s back. The position didn’t last long as Mariscal scrambled and got back to his feet.

It wasn’t long before Marsical was able to work Jackson back down to the mat and continue lighting up his opponent with ground strikes. Jackson never stopped moving to keep Mariscal from unloading on him, but as a result, Jackson was never able to get his offense going, leaving it pretty clear who would walk away the winner on the scorecards.

Shara Magomedov moves to 14-0 with dominant UD win, calls out Nick Diaz - UFC Abu Dhabi Highlights

After scoring his 13th career win six weeks ago at UFC Saudi Arabia, Shara Magomedov returned to the Octagon on Saturday night in Abu Dhabi for a short-notice scrap with Polish powerhouse Micha? Oleksiejczuk. ‘Bullet’ entered his second fight in as many months on the heels of a big win over Antonio Trócoli in Riyadh. Before that, the undefeated Russian bested Bruno Silva at UFC 294 in October.

Meanwhile, Oleksiejczuk stepped inside the Octagon determined to snap a two-fight losing skid after suffering back-to-back submission losses against Michel Pereira and Kevin Holland.

Putting pressure on early, Oleksiejczuk landed a straight left that sat down Magomedov in the early moments of the opening round. However, it was ‘Hussar’ who was wearing all the damage after getting busted open by a perfectly-timed elbow in close.

Shara Magomedov

Magomedov held the striking advantage in the second, though Oleksiejczuk made a case for himself in the final minute, scoring a takedown and threatening ‘Bullet’ with an RNC. Unable to cinch it in, Oleksiejczuk was content to hold position and potentially steal the round on the scorecards.

As Magomedov began to run away with it in the third, Oleksiejczuk once again went to ground game and secured a takedown. ‘Bullet’ fought his way back up, but quickly found himself flat on his back with less than a minute to go in the fight. Despite the unfavorable position, Magomedov lit up his opponent with some nasty elbows from the bottom just before the final bell.

Tony Ferguson

Determined to snap a staggering seven-fight losing streak, former interim lightweight titleholder Tony Ferguson returned to the Octagon on Saturday night for a scrap with TUF alumnus Michael Chiesa at UFC Abu Dhabi.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for ‘El Cucuy‘ who found himself on the wrong side of history, dropping his eighth straight following a first-round submission loss to ‘Maverick.

Ferguson came out and put pressure on Chiesa early, but neither fighter threw a strike until we were already more than a minute into the contest. As things began to open up, it was clear that Chiesa had the striking advantage, peppering Ferguson with some stiff right hands.

Tony Ferguson

Just past the three-minute mark, Chiesa moved in and landed an all-too-easy takedown before securing Ferguson’s back. Once there, it was just a matter of time.

Moments later, Chiesa cinched his arm under Ferguson’s chin, forcing ‘El Cucuy’ to tap out.

Belal Muhammad stuns Leon Edwards, wins welterweight title via unanimous decision – UFC 304 Highlights

Belal Muhammad

14 months removed from his last appearance inside the Octagon, top-ranked contender Belal Muhammad stepped into the main event spotlight at UFC 304 looking to land a massive upset over reigning welterweight world champion Leon Edwards.

Muhammad got his ground game going right out the gate, securing a solid takedown against the fence. Before long, Edwards was able to muscle his way back up and went to work on the feet, lighting up Muhammad with a series of solid strikes. With less than a minute to go in the first, Muhammad appeared to clip Edwards, forcing the champ back and allowing the challenger to secure another clean takedown to close the round.

Belal Muhammad

Muhammad picked up right where he left off in the second, backing up Edwards with some strikes before shooting in and taking the champ’s back. Every time ‘Rocky’ would fight his way back up, Muhammad would ragdoll him back down to the canvas.

In a near-disastrous moment, ‘Remember The Name’ inadvertently spiked Edwards on the top of his head during a mat return, though the referee either didn’t notice or simply chose not to address it.

Belal Muhammad

After giving up two rounds, Leon Edwards turned the tables in the third, revering a takedown from Muhammad and taking his opponent’s back. Rocky’ slapped on a body triangle and went fishing for a rear-naked choke, but ‘Bully B’ prevented Edwards from cinching anything in.

Round four saw Muhammad back in control, landing another early takedown and taking Edwards’ back. In the final 30 seconds, ‘Rocky’ reversed the position, but was unable to muster before the bell. It was more of the same in the fifth with ‘Remember The Name’ taking Edwards down and quickly controlling his back.

Belal Muhammad

With time running out, Edwards reversed position and dropped some nasty elbows from the top position, busting open Muhammad and bloodying him. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to close the gap on the scorecards.

Official Result: Belal Muhammad def. Leon Edwards via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) to win the UFC welterweight world championship
