In the main event, we will see a bout between two ranked middleweights when Derek Brunson attempts to spoil the streak of rising contender Edmen Shahbazyan. Coming off back to back victories in 2019, Brunson is looking to continue this streak adding Shahbazyan’s name to the list. Shahbazyan who has finished all his victories inside the UFC is coming off a first-round knockout of Brad Tavares in November of 2019. In the co-main event, Joanne Calderwood will take on Jennifer Maia in a women’s flyweight bout to determine the next title challenger to face Valentina Shevchenko.

IT’S TIME! The UFC Fight Island 3main event is finally upon us. Former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker returns to the cage for the first time since surrendering his 185lb title to Israel Adesanya. The Aussie takes on Darren Till who is looking to make it two in a row since moving up from welterweight.
Round 1: Darren Til charges in from the off and eats a jab. Robert Whittaker lands another nice jab early. Both fighters clash and Whittaker ends up on the floor from an elbow. He looks hurts for a second and Till tries to dive on him. The former champ survives the barrage and gets back to his feet. Till is starting to get his strikes off. He lands a huge elbow and some nice left hands. The Englishman is getting loose. He’s throwing big punches and kicks – many of which are landing. Whittaker is starting to settle down now. He’s starting to get off his own offence now. Whittaker lands a big straight right hand. A low kick from the Aussie just before the bell sounds to end round one.
Round 2: Till over commits and is made to pay at the start of round two. Whittaker launches in with an overhand right and gets the knock down. He follows his opponent down. Till smartly closes the guard and is able to stifle the attack of Whittaker. Not for long though. Whittaker is landing big elbows and nasty ground and pound. The former champ lands three consecutive elbows. Till is eating them but not defending. He manages to get back to his feet and the fight goes back to the middle. Till looks busted up. Whittaker looks light on his feet. Till is following his opponent around the octagon, feinting a lot but not throwing. Every so often Whittaker throws something big to keep Till honest. Big head kick from Till, Whittaker blocks well but that sounded powerful. The rounds ends.
Round 3: Whittaker opens up with a big low leg kick. Till returns with a nice uppercut. Both men clearly respect the other. Lot’s of hesitation which is proceeded by explosive flurries – don’t blink! Till seems to have taken an eye poke. He’s blinking but waving on Whittaker at the same time. As the Aussie jumps in Till fires of a huge knee up the middle. Whittaker shoots for the takedown but quickly bails. Whittaker fakes the takedown but fires a overhand over the top which just misses. He again shoots but is easily shrugged off. ‘The Reaper’ continues to swing wild and Till remains composed as a very close round three draws to a close.
Round 4: Till more aggressive at the start of round four after telling his corner of an injury. Lot’s of feints from Whittaker who is trying to set traps. Till isn’t biting – at least not yet. Till lands several hard shots. Whittaker spins round and looks hurt for a second but quickly gets back to striking range. Whittaker shoots but is again stuffed easily. Straight left from Till. They clinch up. Till lands two knees. Whittaker scores with an uppercut on the exit. Till eats a right hand then dodges two more. Both men posture in the centre of the cage as the round ends.
Round 5: Whittaker throwing big early. Head kick following by a left hand from Till. One-two from Till which just catches the former champ who fires back with a leg kick. Whittaker shoots in and is again doesn’t get close but does land on the exit. Huge left down the middle from Till but Whittaker just eats it. Another level change from Whittaker who seems to be using the shot to land punches. Till lands a huge elbow which cuts Whittaker. Till takes an eye poke. Herb Dean stops the fight for a few seconds before they get back to it. Whittaker secures the take down and rides out the final moments of the fight in the top position

In the co-main event, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua faces off against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira for the third time. The former UFC light-heavyweight champion holds two wins over ‘Lil Nog’. Will he get another? Let’s find out…
Round 1: Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua slowly presses the action at the start of round one. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is backing up and circling around the cage. ‘Shogun’ slaps in a couple of low leg kicks. Rua rushes in. He’s unable to land anything but put his opponent up against the fence. Rua is landing knees to the legs while clinched up but ‘Lil Nog’ is working well with body shots. They break away from the fence and Nogueira lands a nice straight left. He gets a bit over confident and eats a couple of punches as he bulldozes forward. Nogueira is now the man leading the dance. He lands a big punch which clearly hurts ‘Shogun’ Carnage ensues! Both men are winging in punches. ‘Shogun’ dives for the takedown and secures it. He ends the rounds on top.
Round 2: ‘Shogun’ uses some feints to close the distance and press the fight up against the fence. ‘Lil Nog’ quickly separates and returns to the middle of the octagon. Nogueira is looking good. He’s got his left hand cocked and ready to go. He’s repeatedly firing it down the middle. ‘Shogun’ begins to fire back and a war breaks out once again. Both men land big and both men seem to have hurt the other. ‘Lil Nog’ seems to stumble into a takedown and then enjoys some time in top position before the fight returns to the feet. Rua shoots for a takedown of his own but is shrugged. He goes back to his boxing and lands a beautiful counter right hand. ‘Lil Nog’ is following his opponent around the cage. He’s throwing big and trying to score a knockout with every punch. He continues to chase Rua but is unable to get off anything significant before the round ends.
Round 3: Powerful inside low kick from ‘Shogun’ to open round three. He rushes in and eats a one-two for his efforts. He again comes in a little too clumsy and eats a big shot – a little wobble from the former champ. ‘Lil Nog’ is having success with his straight left hand and his corner are cheering loudly every time it lands. ‘Shogun’ lands a jumping kick to the body and a straight right hand simultaneously. Rua lands a few more big shots. He’s starting to build momentum and then shoots for the takedown – he gets it! Rua is in half guard landing short shots. He postures up and begins landing heavier strikes. They transition into a awkward side control position were Rua continues to try and land shots as the buzzer sounds to end the fight and bring and end to this epic rivalry.

Round 1: Fabricio Werdum opens up the fight with lots of kicks. Alexander Gustafsson is light on his feet and manages to stuff a takedown from the BJJ specialist. Werdum manages to take the back as the Sweedish fighter tries to stand up. Once there he begins attacking the arm. Gustafsson battles hard but can’t stop the submission.

Next up on the UFC Fight Island 3 main card is a women’s strawweight contest between Carla Esparza and Marina Rodriguez.
Round 1: Esparza takes Rodriguez down right away after avoiding some big strikes. There doesn’t seem to be much action but Esparza seems to be bleeding from the top from a strike from Rodriguez. Rodriguez reverses soon after and gets to her feet. Rodriguez looks to land a head kick but it’s blocked. Rodriguez lands a number of strikes before Esparza shoots for a desperate takedown but it’s defended.
Round 2: The second round starts and Esparza has some swelling on her left eye. Rodriguez starts to strike but Esparza takes her down again and starts to land sme strikes from the top. Rodriguez reverses with some scrambles as the round ends. Not a lot of action in that round.
Round 3: They start to strike before Esparza momentarily gets Rodriguez on the ground. She lands some big strikes but Rodriguez gets up and separates. Esparza takes her down soon after and controls her for quite some time. Rodriguez eventually gets up but Esparza times a takedown perfectly to end the round on top.
Official result: Carla Esparza defeats Marina Rodriguez via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27).

Next up on the UFC Fight Island 3 main card is a light heavyweight bout between Paul Craig and Gadzhimurad Antigulov.
Round 1: Antigulov clinches up with Craig before taking him down. Craig has an aggressive guard and looks to attempt a triangle. He has his legs wrapped around Atigulov’s head but receives a number of big strikes to the head on the ground at the same time. However, that allows Craig to sink in the triangle properly as he gets the tap!
Official result: Paul Craig defeats Gadzhimurad Antigulov via triangle choke (R1, 2:06).
