Jailton Almeida calls for fight with Ciryl Gane next after UFC Sao Paulo win

Off the back of a dominant wrestling and grappling performance en route to a decision shutout win over common-foe, Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC Sao Paulo last night in his native, Brazil – surging contender, Jailton Almeida has offered to feature in a championship eliminator in his next fight, calling out former interim champion, Ciryl Gane for a clash on enemy soil in Paris.

Almeida, the current number nine ranked heavyweight contender, made his second Octagon walk in his native Brazil this year – remaining undefeated in the promotion, courtesy of a one-sided unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-45) victory against short-notice replacement and former title chaser, Lewis.

The victory came as Bahia native, Almeida native’s second in as many main event clashes, having previously taken home a one-sided first round rear-naked choke win against another common-opponent, Jairzinho Rozenstruik back in May in the main event of UFC Charlotte.

And announcing plans to sit Octagon-side next weekend in New York ahead of an interim heavyweight title fight between Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall at UFC 295, Almeida suggested a number one contenders fight between himself and former interim gold holder Gane in France next.

“You know we worried; we knew he (Derrick Lewis) had a heavy hand,” Jailton Almeida told Michael Bisping during his Octagon interview after UFC Sao Paulo. “We had 15-20 days to come up with a strategy for this fight, and we were able to keep him down and avoid his right hand.”

“I was touched and I didn’t really feel it,” Jailton Almeida explained. “I’m going to call out a name here. I want Ciryl Gane. I’ll fight in Paris, we can do it in Salvador, wherever. I’m ready; let’s do it, Ciryl Gane.”

Most recently headlining the promotion’s sophomore appearance in his native Paris, former interim champion, Gane landed a hugely dominant win over Moldovan grappler, Sergei Spivak, landing a barrage of strikes on the challenger en route to a second round TKO win back in September.

Jailton Almeida

Jailton Almeida earned his 15th straight win inside the Octagon on Saturday night in the UFC Sao Paulo headliner, scoring a decisive unanimous decision victory over heavyweight knockout artist Derrick Lewis.

Fans looking to see an exciting first-round finish were left undeniably disappointed as Almeida took ‘The Black Beast’ into deep waters, riding out (literally) the 25-minute affair in complete control from bell to bell. Almeida put his world-class grappling skills to work, taking down Lewis in each round at will, and was largely content to hold position, controlling Lewis, but unwilling to offer much in the way of strikes or submission attempts.

In the opening round, Almeida nearly secured an arm triangle choke, but after Lewis successfully defended, Almeida no longer seemed interested in hunting for submissions.

In the end, it made for a bit of a snoozefest, but Almeida once again showed the world that he is perhaps the greatest grappler in the heavyweight division.

Official Result: Jailton Almeida def. Derrick Lewis via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-45)

Nicolas Dalby

Perpetual dog Nicolas Dalby scored his fourth straight win at UFC Sao Paulo, landing a stunning upset of highly touted Brazilian prospect Gabriel Bonfim.

From the opening bell, Dalby looked to make the bout an all-out brawl, marching forward and immediately putting pressure on Bonfim. After trading some vicious blows on the feet, Bonfim utilized his wrestling skills to get Dalby to the ground and held his opponent on the mat, peppering him with elbow strikes throughout the end of the first five minutes.

Bonfim looked to repeat his first-round success in the second, securing a takedown of Dalby in the early going. However, Dalby managed to fight his way back up. ‘Danish Dynamite’ once again put the pedal to the metal in an attempt to overwhelm Bonfim. The game plan worked as Bonfim began sucking wind and looking noticeably dejected as Dalby poured on the strikes.

Brawling against the fence with less than a minute to go in the round, Dalby appeared to land a knee that sent Bonfim to the canvas. Dalby jumped on his man and delivered a series of unanswered strikes forcing the referee to step in and call for the stoppage.

Official Result: Nicolas Dalby def. Gabriel Bonfim via TKO (knee to ground and pound strikes) at 4:33 of Round 2.

Elves Brener

Brazilian standout Elves Brener made it three-in-a-row at UFC Sao Paulo, scoring a highlight-reel-worthy knockout against Kaynan Kruschewsky to kick off the main card.

After wins over Zubaira Tukhugov and Guram Kutateladze in his first two outings under the UFC banner, Brener had his best showing yet. From the get-go, Brener looked to put the pressure on Kruschewsky. Near the four-minute mark of the opening round, Brener threw a big looping right hand that Kruschewsky avoided, but by shifting his head to the right, it opened up an opportunity for Brener to come back around with a left that caught his opponent behind the ear, sending Kruschewsky crashing to the canvas face first.

Recognizing Kruschewsky was unconscious, Brener stopped himself from attempting to cause any further damage as the referee moved in to call for the stoppage with just under a minute left to go in the first round.

Official Result: Elves Brener def. Kaynan Kruschewsky via KO (overhand left) at 4:01 of Round 1.

Derrick Lewis claims he was tricked into UFC Sao Paulo fight I didn't want to fight here

Former undisputed and interim heavyweight championship challenger, Derrick Lewis has claimed he was “tricked” into fighting Jailton Almeida in this weekend’s UFC Fight Night headliner in Sao Paulo, Brazil – revealing he did not want to fight in the country.

Lewis, a former multiple-time title challenger under the banner of the promotion, makes his return to the Octagon this weekend in a reshuffled UFC Sao Paulo main event against the surging, Almeida, replacing an injured former foe, Curtis Blaydes.

Returning to the winner’s enclosure at UFC 291 back in July, Lewis turned in stunning opening minute stoppage win over Marcos Rogerio de Lima with a flying knee and follow-up strikes in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Derrick Lewis claims he was “tricked” into fighting in Brazil

Hitting the headlines following an arrest and subseqeunt charge for reckless driving this week, Lewis has claimed once touching down in Brazil for his fight with Almeida – how he never actually wanted to fight in Sao Paulo, and was “tricked” into the bout.

“A few weeks ago we got a call about this guy and I just agreed straight away,” Derrick Lewis told FOX Sports during a recent interview. “I didn’t know the fight was in Brazil, though. It was only after accepting that they [the UFC] told me. I’d always said to my manager I would never fight in Brazil because of the taxes being so bad. So I got tricked into accepting this fight.”

“I said I didn’t want to fight here, and since arriving, nothing has changed,” Derrick Lewis explained. “I can’t wait to go home. I’m basically fighting for them right now. I’m not getting anything out of it. By the time I pay my coaches and so on – it’s not even worth it – and that’s if I don’t get pickpocketed here. Plus, I can’t eat none of the food – I’m not trusting it, I’ll end up sick.”

Jailton Almeida betting favorite to beat Derrick Lewis at UFC Sao Paulo this weekend

Surging heavyweight grappling talent, Jailton Almeida is closing as a significant betting favorite to land a victory over former interim and undisputed heavyweight title challenger, Derrick Lewis, ahead of this weekend’s reworked UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo main event clash in Brazil.

Almeida, the current number nine ranked heavyweight contender and a product of Dana White’s Contender Series draws former title challenger, Lewis in a reworked pairing, after initial opponent, would-be common-foe, Curtis Blaydes suffered an injury whilst preparing for the clash.

As for Lewis, the fan-favorite promotional and heavyweight division knockout king turned in his first victory in three fights earlier this year on the main card of UFC 291 in July, dropping and stopping Jailton Almeida’s compatriot, Marcos Rogerio de Lima with a stunning flying-knee and follow-up strikes knockout in Salt Lake City, Utah.

And set to take main event honors for the second bout running, Bahia native, Almeida is closing as high as a -450 betting favorite on many markers to defeat Lewis – with the former championship challenger sat as an underdog as high as +333.

Many markets and bookies – offering free spins no deposit betting, are also still taking bets and wagers on this weekend’s UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo return, including a massive heavyweight fight between Almeida and Lewis.

5-0 since his move from the Contender Series back in 2021, the above-mentioned submission threat, Almeida makes his sophomore main event clash at UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo this weekend in South America, following a stunning first round rear-naked choke submission win over Suriname kickboxer, Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Fight Night Charlotte back in May – earning a Performance of the Night bonus.

Back in Janaury of this year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Almeida stopped common-foe, Shamil Abdurakhimov with a one-sided knockout win via second round ground strikes. With his win over the above-mentioned, Rozenstruik, Almeida improved to 19-2 as a professional to boot.

Previously challenging for both undisputed and interim heavyweight gold against Daniel Cormier, and Ciryl Gane, respectively during his lengthy Octagon run, Lewis holds a stunning 22 separate career knockout victories.

Over the course of his storied run in the heavyweight division, Lewis, 38, landed stunning wins over the likes of Gabriel Gonzaga, Travis Browne, Alexander Volkov, Curtis Blaydes, and Chris Daukaus – before his July knockout of de Lima extended his knockout record in the entire UFC to 14 stoppages via strikes.

Furthermore, Lewis became the first fighter in the Octagon to land a victory over eventual undisputed UFC heavyweight champion and recent professional boxing debutante, Francis Ngannou, albeit in a hugely forgettable monstrous heavyweight clash back in 2018.

Yet to go the distance over the course of his winning run, Almeida has landed a whopping 12 separate submission wins, to go with a further seven victories by way of knockout or technical knockout.

In each of his five triumphs inside the Octagon to boot, Almeida, who closed as a betting underdog in his Contender Series win – has closed as a betting favorite in each of his wins under the UFC banner.
