Paulo Costa has revealed why he missed weight by almost 20 pounds for his fight with Marvin Vettori—and he feels no reason to apologize for it.

Costa is now on a two-fight losing streak after his defeat to Vettori at UFC Vegas 41 on Saturday. The brutal back-and-forth war saw a noticeably full-figured “Borrachinha” land a series of devastating kicks to Vettori’s body and head. But the granite-chinned Italian responded with blistering strikes of his own to outland the Brazilian on the scorecards.

It was a bout that saw the duo make their unintended light heavyweight debuts thanks to Costa’s weight cutting shenanigans during the week. After the 30-year-old declared that he wasn’t going to make the middleweight limit, the fight had to be moved to a 195-pound catchweight, then to the 205-pound light heavyweight limit. Costa didn’t provide a reason why he was struggling to cut weight, promising media that he would post fight.

Paulo Costa Reveals Reason For Weight Issues

At the UFC Vegas 41 post-fight press conference, Costa stayed true to his word. When asked why he struggled to make weight for the fight, Paulo explained the reason.

“The only problem, my friend, is I lost this fight, so it will look like excuse [chuckles],” said Costa. “You know, nothing … I not have excuse to nothing, I did a good job there, Marvin as well, congratulation for him and to me, I think. But, I had some problem to not make—to not coming here with my usual weight, I came a little bit higher weight because I need to stop some weeks of training.”

When asked if his break in training was caused by an injury, Paulo replied in the affirmative. “Yeah, my left bicep,” he said.

Paulo Costa Shows No Remorse For Vettori

In his post-fight Octagon interview, Vettori didn’t mince words when it came to his feelings for Costa, branding him a “c*nt” for the drama which transpired during the week. And when Costa was asked if he should apologize to the Italian, he flatly refused.

“No, no, no way, no way of that,” said Costa.

So, maybe “Borrachinha” isn’t one to apologize. But does he feel bad about failing to make weight and the imposition he placed on Vettori?

“No, of course not,” said Costa. “Of course not. I came here and the UFC suggest to fight on catchweight or 205, and I just say ‘Yes, let’s go. I don’t care for weight.’ So … this is a fair fight. The both guys did weight at the same day, at the same limit, so … that can’t be more fair than that.”

What do you think? Should Paulo Costa be more remorseful for his failed weight cut?

Paulo Costa Won’t Return to Middleweight, According to Dana White

Paulo CostaUFC president Dana White won’t let Paulo Costa fight at middleweight going forward, after the drama of UFC Vegas 41 fight week with Marvin Vettori. UFC president Dana White won’t let Paulo Costa fight at middleweight going forward, after the drama of UFC Vegas 41 fight week with Marvin Vettori.

Costa vs. Vettori took place at a catchweight of 205 pounds after Costa came in heavier than normal in the middle of the fight week. After a bit of back-and-forth negotiating, Vettori agreed to take the catchweight bout, and ultimately the two of them put on an instant classic for the fans.

White was pleased with the fight itself but described the “nightmare” that Costa put the UFC brass through this week.

Dana White won’t allow Paulo Costa to fight at middleweight going forward

During his UFC Vegas 41 post-fight press conference, White made his intentions for Costa very clear.

“You don’t get to pick what weight you get to fight when this happens,” White said. “He’ll have to fight at 205 [pounds].”

“But, on the flip side, give him credit. He fought his a** off tonight and came in ready and in shape.”

Costa has fought at middleweight for the entirety of his career to this point and hasn’t fought at light heavyweight even dating back to his time on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. He’ll have to put on an extra 20 pounds for his fights going forward, assuming he still wants to fight in the UFC.

Costa alluded to a lot of things happening behind the scenes that led to his antics this week but remained rather coy about it in the days leading up to the bout. Many have assumed that Costa suffered through a medical ordeal which led to him not being able to make 185 pounds.

Costa could potentially be a force at light heavyweight, while Vettori moves one step closer to possibly getting another shot at middleweight champion Israel Adesanya down the line.

The UFC Vegas 41 bonuses have been released.

The event took place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the UFC Apex facility. Headlining the card was a clash between Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori. This fight saw both guys come to fight. While Costa did fall at the start of the first round after tripping, he did come back with a series of nasty body kicks. Marvin was putting together some nice combos and even hurt him with a left hook.

Costa, who looked exhausted the majority of the fight, stunned him with a head kick in the second round. Marvin is a freak for somehow surviving it. In the third round, Costa scored a takedown, but was overtaken by Marvin, who got into guard on top. Costa did take a lot of damage in the fourth round thanks to various blitzes by Marvin. They were close in striking in the fifth round and Vettori walked away with the decision win.

The co-main event saw more action between Grant Dawson and Rick Glenn.

This fight saw a one-sided domination by Dawson, who took him down in all three rounds and stayed in half guard. The more noteworthy moment came with a little over a minute in the fight, Glenn did scramble to top position and worked him over with strikes. Glenn got in a choke, but it was little too late. The fight ended in a majority draw.

Marvin Vettori

Marvin Vettori is back in the winner’s enclosure off the back of a instant classic five round back-and-forth with one-time title challenger, Paulo Costa — besting the Belo Horizonte native with a unanimous decision (48-46, 48-46, 48-46) victory in the main event of UFC Vegas 41.

Headlining in a light heavyweight matchup against the #1 ranked contender, Vettori managed to signifcantly outland his opposition, particularly a floor higher, opting for combinations and a more frequent output over the majority of the 25-minute limit.

For Costa, despite his questionable fight week prior to tonight’s headliner, the Brazilian turned in a hugely impressive and admirable performance over the course of five gruelling rounds — landing a multitude of bone shaking body kicks off a whipping right limit.

Costa was however deducted a point by referee, Jason Herzog despite his protests, having landed an inadvertant eye poke midway through the second round — putting even further onus on him to remove the judges from the equation against the Trento native.

Unable to mitigate the constant pressure of Vettori, as well as uncanny durability, Costa suffered a unanimous decision defeat — falling to his second consecutive loss, while Kings MMA star, Vettori puts himself firmly back into title contention.

Off the back of the victory, Vettori still branded Costa a “c*nt” for the turbulent fight week endured as a result of Costa’ weight-cut fiasco, but admired the Brazilian’s powerful offense. In a tongue-in-cheek comment, the Italian claimed he would buy himself another watch after he had received 20% of Costa’s fight purse.

Below, catch the highlights from an excellent main event tilt between Vettori and Costa.
