Tito Ortiz Challenges Ryan Bader At UFC 132, Is This His Last Chance To Prove Himself In The Octagon?

Tito Ortiz is one of the biggest stars in mixed martial arts history. His rivalry with Ken Shamrock is one of the best in history even though Ortiz won all three times they fought each other. He was at one time one of the very best light heavyweight fighters in the world.

Unfortunately for Ortiz, those days are long gone. Since he defeated Shamrock for the third time in October 2006, his record is 0-4-1.

At first you could justify some of the losses because he was going up against some of the best fighters in the world. He lost to Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida and Forrest Griffin. He would have beaten Rashad Evans via decision if he hadn’t been docked a point for holding the fence, so he had to settle for a draw.

His last loss was to Matt Hamill, who is a decent fighter but nothing special, at UFC 121. It was believed that Ortiz was going to be released following that loss, but he was given another shot.

Now, he challenges Ryan Bader, who is one of the best wrestlers and a rising star in the sport, at UFC 132. No one expects Ortiz to win this fight, and if all things are equal he shouldn’t win this fight because Bader is just a better fighter.

That would be five losses in six fights for Ortiz. He is popular, yes, but if he can’t compete against the guys in UFC, he has no business still fighting in this organization.

I expect Ortiz to lose in a slaughter. Bader will put on a wrestling clinic, and Ortiz will be looking for a new job.

It’s sad to say because of how great he once was, but it’s the sad reality of the situation.

The result of Charles Oliveira vs. Nik Lentz is now officially a no contest.

The Pennsylvania state athletic commission on Wednesday determined that an illegal knee by Oliveira set up his submission win at this past Sunday’s UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh.

“After review of the tape of this contest and after consultation with the referee the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission has ruled that the results of this match will be changed to a no-contest,” Executive Director Gregory Sirb said in a statement provided to MMAFighting.com. “This change is a direct result from an accidental kick to the head by Mr. Oliveira to a grounded Mr. Lentz.”

In the second round of the preliminary lightweight fight, Oliveira landed a knee to the head of a grounded Lentz and proceeded to tap out Lentz with a rear-naked choke at one minute and 48 seconds. The knee, while accidental, was clearly illegal and noticed by the live audience watching and the UFC commentators. However, there was no call from the one person who could have made a difference that night, the referee.

“All the other referees were jumping up, guys from the commission were jumping up, I was jumping up. A lot of people were wondering what was going on, why the fight wasn’t being stopped, because it was so blatant,” Lentz’s coach Greg Nelson told MMAFighting.com Tuesday, adding that Lentz suffered an injury to his eye socket due to the knee.

Despite the controversial finish, the match was exciting enough that it was awarded Fight of the Night by the UFC and both fighters walked away each with a $50,000 bonus.

With the result change, Lentz (21-3-2) remains undefeated in his UFC run with five wins, a draw and a no contest. Meanwhile, Oliveira (14-1) will have to try again to bounce back from the first loss of his career last December against Jim Miller.

Cruz(17-1) commented that the 2007 loss, “It left a mark on my brain, he’s next on my hit list, I’m going to whoop his butt, I’m going to do it.”

Cruz and Faber then speak about the genesis of their dislike for each other.

UFC 132: 10 Memorable Sports Moments Since Tito Ortiz Last Won a Fight

Tito Ortiz will be fighting for his UFC career when he meets Ryan Bader on Saturday, July 2.  UFC president Dana White has said that Ortiz’s UFC 132 fight against Bader is his last chance with the promotion—in short, if he loses he will almost assuredly be released.

Ortiz has not won a fight for quite some time. How long’s it been, you ask?  Well, how about October 10, 2006. On that day, Ortiz defeated Ken Shamrock via first-round TKO.

Since that time, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has gone 0-4-1, losing to Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida, Forrest Griffin and Matt Hamill. His draw came in a bout against Rashad Evans.

So, it’s been close to five years since Ortiz’s last win.

To help you put that in perspective, here are ten memorable moments in sports that have occurred since Ortiz last won a fight.
