Ike Villanueva is looking to get his first UFC win agaisnt Brazilian submission specialist Vinicius Moreira at UFC Fight Island 8.

Round 1: Ike Villanueva is coming forward with lot’s of output at the start of round one. Vinicius Moreira is doing well to keep his hands up and is avoiding most of the attacks. Villanueva switches it up, goes to the body and lands well. That opens up the head which he lands on clearly for the first time in this fight. Moreira steams forwards and lands a punch of his own. The Brazilian has his hands up high so Villanueva is targetting the legs and body now. Villanueva seems to be out of range most of the time. He’s trying to cover ground before throwing his punches but they are missing badly. He makes up for it with a big punch upstairs. Villanueva gets a reaction for the first time in this fight. Moreira lands a superman punch. Villanueva connects with an uppercut. They clash and clinch for a second. Moreira throws a knee on the exit. He tries to get to work with his kicks as round one comes to a close.

Round 2: Both men come out swinging at the start of round two. Villanueva appears to be the better striker. Moreira appears to be vulnerable when he attempts to strike. Villanueva throws an overhand right that flattens Moreira. This fight is over!

OFFICIAL RESULT: Ike Villanueva def. Vinicius Moreira via KO in round two.

COVID-19

Two fighters expected to compete on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi later this month have tested positive for the COVID-19 and therefore won’t be able to fight.

Brazilian bantamweight Anderson dos Santos was the first fighter to test positive for COVID-19 according to MMA Fighting. Like every Brazilian fighter competing on July 11 and July 15 ‘Fight Island’ cards, he had been quarantined at a hotel in Sao Paulo since Wednesday.

Dos Santos and his coach Marcos “Babuino test positive upon arrival at the hotel and were notified yesterday evening. The 34-year-old was expected to face Welsh fighter Jack Shore on July 15. Right now, it remains unclear if Shore will also be pulled from the card or if the UFC will be able to find him an alternative opponent.

Another Brazilian fighter currently on lockdown in Sao Paulo has also tested positive for COVID-19 according to another report from MMA Fighting. UFC light-heavyweight Vinicius Moreira was also scheduled to fight on July 15. He was set to face former Cage Warrior light-heavyweight champion Modestas Bukauskas in his UFC debut before the Brazilian tested positive for COVID-19 and scuppered those plans.

Moreira would’ve entered the fight on the back of three consecutive losses to face one of the best prospects in Europe. Bukauskas has won six straight including three knockout wins in 2019.

EXCLUSIVE | Modestas Bukauskas Wants To Prove He’s ‘The Next Big Thing’

Modestas BukauskasUFC newcomer Modestas Bukauskas is determined to show the world he has what it takes to be one of the best in his promotional debut. Modestas Bukauskas

UFC newcomer Modestas Bukauskas is determined to show the world he has what it takes to be one of the best in his promotional debut. Bukauskas faces off against Brazilian submission specialist Vinicius Moreira in the second of four events scheduled to take place on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi on July 15 – the card will be headlined by Calvin Kattar vs. Dan Ige.

The former Cage Warriors light-heavyweight champion signed for the UFC in January but due to the ongoing global pandemic has been forced to wait for his debut fight. Bukauskas and Moreira were supposed to fight in May, but those plans fell through, he explained while speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA.

“They got me a fight booked actually for May 16th, which was supposed to be in San Diego – that I was very looking forward to. As I signed the contract that’s when the COVID stuff started happening. So, all the excitement my fight was going to get announced and then the next thing you know the whole world shuts down.”

The London based Lithuanian fighter is very aware of the grappling threat posed by Moreira but is confident he’ll be able to keep the fight standing and show the world he is “the next big thing”.

“From what I’ve seen he’s a very extensive and good grappler,” Bukauskas said.  “He takes his guys down to the floor and he really just suffocates them on the floor. So, he’s a very good jiu-jitsu guy and he’s very good at his craft and he’s very good at closing distance and getting in on his opponents. One area he’s lacking and of course he’s gonna be working on it, as anyone would do is in the striking department which is where I see being my main strength or my main attribute against him. Not only that. I’m going to stop the takedowns. I’m going to fire at will with my striking and suffocate him from stand-up so he can’t enforce any of his game. All respect to him but at the end of the day this is my time, this is me now coming up. I’m going to go out there and show them why I’m the next big thing.

Moreira comes into this fight on the back of three consecutive first-round defeats. The Brazilian is surely fighting for his UFC future on July 15 and Bukauskas is expecting the best version of Moreira but that will only bring out a better version of himself, he explained.

“I expect him to be coming out all guns blazing because it is the last fight on his contract. He wasn’t able to take the guys down in his last fights. Who knows what would’ve happened if he had managed to get them down and control those guys in those fights. Obviously, he hasn’t been able to so that’s going to be my goal in my fight to make sure he’s not able to do that. I feel like there’s no pressure. I know I’m better. I know I’ve got the skillset to go and beat him. All I’ve gotta do now is relax and go do the job.”

Do you think Modestas Bukauskas can be a future star at light-heavyweight?

Following the news that Paul Felder and Dan Hooker would headline the UFC’s return to Auckland on February 23, another three fights have been added to the card.

Light heavyweight Tyson Pedro features as he returns to action for the first time since his TKO defeat to Mauricio Rua last year against Vinicius Moreira.

Pedro has lost three of his last four bouts after entering the promotion as an unbeaten prospect. A win against Moreira — loser of his last three outings — would signal the Aussie’s first win in nearly two years.

Another Aussie in Jake Matthews will look to make it two wins in a row when he faces Emil Meek in a welterweight bout. The 25-year-old was previously on a three-fight winning streak until he was submitted by Anthony Rocco Martin in December last year. He would bounce back with a conservative unanimous decision win over Rostem Akman at UFC 243 last month.

Meek, meanwhile, is on a two-fight losing streak and hasn’t fought since getting outpointed by Bartosz Fabinski in July 2018. His loss before that was a unanimous decision defeat to current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Lastly, Ben Sosoli looks to get his first UFC win when he meets Marcos Rogerio de Lima. Sosoli made his debut in a now-overturned decision defeat to Greg Hardy last month.

Rogerio de Lima, on the other hand, has been alternating between wins and losses since 2015. His last outing was a submission defeat to Stefan Struve.

What a card UFC Minneapolis has turned out to be thus far. Eryk Anders continued the trend of finishes as the preliminary card draws near it’s end, knocking out Vinicius Moreira in the first round of their light heavyweight matchup.

Anders came out and landed some bombs clean on Moreira’s chin, dropping him to the canvas. The former college football player followed up with some vicious ground-and-pound, even getting in a few unnecessary shots on what looked to be an already unconscious Moreira due to poor officiating, to pick up the finish.
