GLENDALE, Ariz. — The smaller fighters stepped on the WEC scale for the last time at the Jobing.com Arena on Wednesday afternoon. It marked the latest in a week full of lasts as we inch closer to the WEC’s final event in the form of WEC 53 on Thursday night.

Hometown favorite and current WEC lightweight champ Ben Henderson got the warmest reception, and though he needed to strip all the way down (with the help of a WEC beach towel to preserve his modesty, of course) to hit the 155-pound limit, he made the weight on his first attempt and told the throng of supporters that it was his honor to fight in front of them at the WEC’s last event.

Challenger Anthony Pettis gave the champ his due, saying, “Ben’s a great fighter. He’s the champ for a reason. I’ve just got to be better than him everywhere.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Donald Cerrone may not be meeting his old pal Jamie Varner for a third time when the WEC rolls out its final event on Thursday night, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t thinking about each other.

“I would love that fight again, and again, and in the parking lot, and wherever I can get it,” Cerrone said at Tuesday’s WEC 53 open workouts. “But it’ll come in due time. Hopefully he wins his next fight and I can see him in the UFC. I plan on whipping his a– every chance I get, so I don’t ever plan on letting him dictate one round or one second of any fight ever again.”

It’s a sentiment that’s likely shared by Varner, who recently described Cerrone as a “lonely, uneducated hillbilly” in an interview with MMA Fighting. But while Cerrone admitted he wasn’t aware of that latest salvo, even he seems to be on the verge of acknowledging that the time might have come for him to finally move on from that rivalry after winning a unanimous decision in their last meeting.

Some habits, however, die hard.

A voracious reader of sci-fi and fantasy novels, WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson is currently in the midst of plowing through a a re-telling of the King Arthur myth called “King Maker,” a fitting title for someone whose stated goal is to become the sport’s pound-for-pound best.

Even a year ago, it seemed highly unlikely Henderson could reach such a level anytime soon while under the banner of the WEC. But a sudden merger paired with a crack at the UFC lightweight champion for the winner of Thursday’s WEC title match between champ Henderson and No. 1 contender Anthony Pettis puts him two wins away from likely adding his name to the pound-for-pound list.

The first obstacle will be at WEC 53, with Henderson and Pettis closing out the last show in organizational history, but the ultimate goal remains somewhere in the back of his mind.

British-Iranian lightweight Kamal Shalorus will miss the promotion that gave him his big break in mixed martial arts.

“Honestly, I love WEC,” Shalorus recently told MMAFighting.com. “WEC is kind of like my home and I know UFC and WEC [will be] coming together. I’m going to miss the WEC.”

While the WEC and UFC are within the same family and by default, share much in common, there will still be something lost once the WEC-UFC merger is completed.

“It’s such a great organization, but at the end, the WEC and the UFC are the same, so I’m so super excited if I could get inside the UFC,” he continued. “Yeah, I’m super excited, but I feel like I wish WEC were there too, you know?”
