Heading into the much anticipated UFC 196 this weekend, one fighter stands with probably the biggest opportunity for gain, the celebrated women’s bantamweight title contender, Miesha Tate. The coveted bantamweight belt has seemed out of reach for Tate for several years after her 3rd Round submission loss to Ronda Rousey at UFC 168 in December 2013. With Rousey’s shocking defeat at the hands of new girl Holly Holm at UFC 194, the door suddenly opened wide for Tate.

A victory against Holm, while obviously being difficult to achieve, could be the launch pad for a new era in Tate’s successful career. She is currently on a four fight win streak, which she believed had earned her another shot at Rousey. Her last loss was actually against Rousey at UFC 168. But the UFC and Dana White were wary of putting Tate against Rousey for the third time (she also fought and lost to Rousey in Strikeforce).

But she could cap this win streak with a championship belt. And she has been focused on everything a victory could bring from the moment Holm’s head kick shattered Rousey’s perfect record and the MMA world. In an interview with MMAInterviews.tv she said,

“When Holly beat Ronda I thought immediately I have to be next in line . . . I’m going to get to win a world title in front of millions of people . . . I’m really glad that things have worked out the way that they did, and I think that 2016 is going to be my year.”

Winning the bantamweight title is obviously a dream of Tate’s, but she is uniquely poised to capitalize on this opportunity. The mere fact that Rousey has been defeated will give Tate the psychological edge and game plan to potentially defeat Rousey in a title defense. So a win against Holm could propel Tate to multiple title defenses and a chance to erase in many people’s minds her career defining moment, double losses to Rousey, and replace that negative moment with the more permanent, positive image of a belt around her waist.

Defeating Holly Holm will be no mean feat. Tate is two inches shorter and gives up four inches in reach, which plays right into Holm’s strengths. However, Tate has recently shown a patient determination to wear down opponents and go the distance. Although Tate is known for her submission game, all of Tate’s last 4 victories have come via Decision. She will not be the predictable raging bull that Rousey was, walking into Holm’s well timed punches and elbows.

Tate’s stand up game is slightly better than Rousey on paper, according to UFC’s official stats. Rousey technically lands a higher percentage of punches (52% to Tate’s 47%) but throws considerably less punches (213 to 447 respectively). What is important, however, is the different styles of their stand up. Tate has landed 56% of her strikes while standing, whereas Rousey delivers the majority of her strikes while in the clinch, a position hard to achieve against Holm. While standing and trading with Holm is not advisable, Tate will be far more comfortable on her feet than Rousey was. And Tate believes her standup game has developed tremendously in recent years, but she can still get to ground and go to war in the trenches.

“I don’t think that my fight has to be pretty, it just has to be effective . . . I have a tendency to turn fights into dogfights and to drag people into deep water if I need to.”

To seize this opportunity, Tate will have to use her determination and creativity to patiently work inside Holm’s guard and shoot for takedowns. She will also have to match the cardio of Holm, especially if the fight goes all 5 rounds.

The buildup has been respectful and Tate’s focus has been razor sharp.

“The woman that stands in front of me is Holly, and she deserves 110% of my respect . . . you saw what she did to Ronda. I think to take my eye off the prize for one second would be a huge mistake on my part, and as a veteran I refuse to make that mistake.”

Overcoming the champion was never going to be easy, but if anyone can do it, it’s Miesha Tate.

Holly Holm Reacts To Ronda Rousey’s Claim Of “Still Being Undefeated”

During her appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” earlier this month, Ronda Rousey made the claim that she “really believes she’s still undefeated,” a comment that the legitimately undefeated UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion claims to be “OK” with.

During her appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” earlier this month, Ronda Rousey made the claim that she “really believes she’s still undefeated,” a comment that the legitimately undefeated UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion claims to be “OK” with.

Rousey told Ellen during her appearance on the show:

“I really do believe I’m still undefeated because being defeated is a choice. Everyone has losses in their life, but I choose to always be undefeated.”

Holly Holm, who actually is undefeated in MMA, offered the following response to MMAWeekly.com:

“I feel like, that’s OK with me. Maybe that’s something that is coming out of her mouth that doesn’t really want to fully take in everything. I know for me any loss that I’ve had I look at it like, it is a very, very hard thing to swallow. But you gotta be honest with yourself.”

“Maybe she needs to feel like she’s undefeated and on top and that’s OK for me.”

Holm makes the first defense of her UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship against Miesha Tate in the co-main event of UFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz on Saturday, March 5th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ronda Rousey Takes Exception To Manny Pacquiao’s Homophobic Comments

Boxing mega-star Manny Pacquiao made headlines recently for his anti-gay comments, something former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey doesn’t exactly agree with.

TMZ Sports caught up with Rousey this week and asked for her take on the subject. “Rowdy” Ronda, never shy to give her unfiltered opinion, replied by saying the following:

“I understand that a lot of people use religion as a reason to be against gay people, but there was no ‘Thou shall not be gay,’ you know? God never said that. I really think that our Pope right now now is boss. He was saying something the other day that religion should be all-encompassing and should be about loving everyone. And I think sometimes people take the wrong message.”

Proposed Holly Holm vs. ‘Cyborg’ Justino Catchweight Fight

Now that McGregor vs. Diaz is set for the main event at UFC 196, we can turn our focus to the rest of the card. UFC 196 will feature a great co-main event with Holly Holm (10-0) vs. Miesha Tate (17-5).

Holm is coming off of a upset TKO win over Ronda Rousey (12-1) at UFC 193 back in November. With Rousey sidelined due to Hollywood obligations and other PR related tours, Holm is set to face Tate at UFC 196 on March 5th for a chance to defend her bantamweight title.

However, Bleacher Report has reported that Holm’s manager believes that Rousey does not want to rematch with the champion and proposed a catchweight bout at 140 pounds with Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino.

Lenny Fresquez (Holm’s manager) says the UFC did not follow up on the proposed bout but would like the opportunity to fight the Inivcta FC fighter.

“We’d take that fight if Ronda needs more time to make up her mind.”

Holm has had numerous media tours of her own appearing on hit shows like Live! With Kelly and Michael, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and ExtraTV.

Invicta FC 16

Invicta FC, the all-female promotion, will return to Las Vegas for the first time since last July with Invicta FC 16 next month.

The card takes place March 11 from the Trinidad Pavilion at the Tropicana Las Vegas. The entire card streams live on UFC Fight Pass.

Headlining the night will be Invicta FC atomweight champion Ayaka Hamasaki, as she defends her title against Amber Brown. The 33-year-old Hamasaki (12-1) has won three straight since a 2013 loss to Claudia Gadelha, including her Invicta FC debut last year over Herica Tiburico.

The win vs. Tiburico, which was via split decision, netted Hamasaki the title. She owns four submission and two knockout wins to her credit.

Brown, the challenger, is 6-1 with four consecutive wins to her credit. That includes three straight with Invicta and the last two have been first round submissions.

With flyweight champion Barb Honchak, the only person to hold the title in Invicta, taking time off, the promotion has signed Vanessa Porto and Jennifer Maia to meet in an interim championship match. Porto (18-6) is on a three-fight win streak since a loss to Honchak for the belt three years ago, while Maia (9-4-1) has not fought since a 2014 defeat to DeAnna Bennett.

The rest of the card features Alexa Grasso vs. Stephanie Eggink, Irene Aldana vs. Jessamyn Duke, Roxanne Modafferi vs. Bennett, Tiburcio vs. Jinh Yu Frey, Andrea Lee vs. Sarah D’Alelio, Kelly McGill vs. Amberlynn Orr and Ashley Greenway vs. Sarah Click.

This week, the mixed martial arts (MMA) community was dealt the shocking revelation that former UFC women’s bantamweight Ronda Rousey actually considered suicide following her devastating knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 when the ultra-popular “Rowdy” revealed her formerly frail state in an emotional interview on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

There were understandably a mixed bag of reactions to the news, with some of her fans exhibiting compassion and understanding while others showed a cold and cruel lack of remorse in suggesting Rousey was only doing it for attention, and the MMA media justifiably wondered if she is truly ready to step back into the Octagon for the title rematch that is tentatively talked about for late this year.

Either way, it was tough for Rousey to find too much sympathy as a millionaire movie actress whether she has the belt or not, and prominent MMA figures like Holm and former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar spoke out to state that while they felt for Rousey, they didn’t necessarily feel that sorry for her.

It’s no doubt a shall we say, different, point of view from a once-dominant champion who, only four months ago was considered unstoppable and a candidate to retire undefeated as arguably the best fighter in UFC history. Now that that’s gone, however, all of the dynamics might suggest that Rousey won’t win the title again, and her mental state could certainly have a lot to do with that. Let’s take a look at the largest reasons why Rousey won’t regain her title.
