Polarizing bad boy Nick Diaz may not have a date for his awaited MMA return, but that doesn’t mean he won’t offer his opinion on the heavily blasted UFC 209 main event between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson from Las Vegas last weekend.

Most believe the elder Diaz brother should have been involved on the card that bore his infamous home area code’s number, but the UFC couldn’t book hi nor his brother Nate after reportedly offering Nick fights with Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler.

So Diaz watched the welterweight title bout between Woodley and “Wonderboy,” and like most MMA fans, he came away with a sour taste in his mouth. The longtime star told TMZ Sports his opinion of the lackluster fight:

“Can you believe how f***ing boring that fight was? That was a boring fight. Were you excited? I heard a lot of boos. I heard a lot of boos. All I heard was boos.”

The Stockton slugger moved on to address his next fight, discussing how he wanted a bout with both middleweight champ Michael Bisping and returning former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who will be fighting one another later this year, but they both “ducked” him:

“Listen, you want to know the truth right now? I talked to Michael Bisping already in New York about doing this fight. So, there’s more money for him if he takes the fight with me. We were talking about a catchweight fight, he’s talking about it like it’s going to be hard to make the weight. I’m like, come on. You know, it would be a non-title fight.

“So after I whoop his ass, he still keeps the belt. So that’s more money, then you go fight GSP. Same with Georges. I’m just doing more numbers than he is, so you can do more money to fight me. It makes sense because they haven’t fought me.”

From his own standpoint, it make make sense; but St-Pierre has indeed fought Diaz once before , throughly dominating him in their monstrous UFC 158 meeting that ranks as St-Pierre’s biggest pay-per-view (PPV) headliner.

There’s no doubt Diaz brings in the numbers, yet it also cannot be denied how many numbers it takes to get him into the Octagon despite him not scoring a win since he beat current featherweight BJ Penn in 2011.

Still, none of us would be surprised to see the older Diaz return right into a title fight versus Woodley. “The Chosen One” did a good deal of talking himself up to the point of even deeming himself the “best welterweight of all-time,” but Diaz closed the interview by shutting that down with a quickness:

“No he ain’t. Did you see that fight?”

Tyron Woodley is sick of all the critics of his lackluster (and controversial) UFC 209 win over Stephen ‘Wonderboy” Thompson, and he isn’t bashful about letting everyone know it.

However, he shouldn’t be surprised when his frequent media foil, UFC President Dana White, fires back with some harsh opinions of his own.

Well-known for blaming racism and the UFC’s poor job of promoting him as reasons for his low popularity, Woodley told TMZ Sports he would be a “tough guy to deal with” in the future after he found it off-putting White actually picked Thompson in their boring close call from Las Vegas last Saturday night:

“Dana White thought I won the first fight but he didn’t publicly come out and say he thought I won the first fight, so I thought it was a bit distasteful for the promoter to say he thought [Thompson] won the fight. That’s like me coming out and saying as a fighter that I don’t think he didn’t do a good job of promoting the fight. Which I don’t. I don’t think they’ve done a good job of promoting me as champion.”

The polarizing Woodley continues to drum up his own unique version of headlines – for better or for worse – that almost always focus on how others are treating him, something that has fans scratching their heads. Therefore it wasn’t surprising to hear White fire back, also to TMZ, with a hard-hitting, blunt statement urging Woodley to focus on his next performance and remember who the man who calls the shots is:

“Tyron Woodley came out and said he was going to destroy Thompson and there would be no question he was the champ.

“Well guess what? There’s questions again.

“Let me tell you what…when you have a performance like you did at 209 and you get booed for five straight rounds and then people are booing so loud you can’t even do your interview, you should probably just take your lumps and move on. Get your next fight as fast as you can and try to put that performance behind you. There’s one guy around here who calls the shots and as soon as you learn that, the better off you’ll be.”

Ouch. After much of the pre-fight hype surrounding Woodley vs. Thompson II was fixated on White and Woodley calling each other ‘drama queens’ in the media, this exchange suggests that ongoing saga isn’t likely to end soon.

But as the polarizing exec said, there’s only one man who calls the shots in the UFC. Like him or not, White may have a point about what the hated welterweight champion can do to better his promotion and treatment, yet nothing is guaranteed in the fast-paced, cutthroat UFC world.

The rigors of being champ could just be getting to ‘The Chosen One,’ as even he admitted the pressure is building.

It’s safe to say that the welterweight title bout between Tyron Woodley and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., March 4, 2017) UFC 209 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, didn’t deliver on the momentum created by their “Fight of the Night”-winning first fight at last November’s UFC 205.

It was a largely cautious bout where precious little action was seen from both men until a furious late onslaught from Woodley that most likely earned “The Chosen One” the controversial majority decision after their first fight was ruled a majority draw. Many, including himself and UFC President Dana White thought Thompson, although not doing as much as he could have, outworked Woodley outside of a third-round takedown and some ground and pound, controlling the Octagon and landing more and better shots standing up.

But the judges didn’t feel that way, and one judge, Sal D’Amato, gave Thompson three of the first four rounds only to give Woodley a 10-8 score in the final frame to make the fight a majority draw, something White called insane. The result was a fitting end to a strange and disappointing fight week, and ‘Wonderboy’ is left to wonder what could have been had he been able to take the judges out of the equation.

Although last night’s (Sat., March 4, 2017) UFC 209 didn’t necessarily deliver the most exciting pay-per-view (PPV) main event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the two top fighters on the card still earned a solid purse for their effort.

But they weren’t the highest-earning fighters on the card, however, as that honor went to main card fighters Alistair Overeem and Mark Hunt for their exciting tilt, where “The Reem” scored an emphatic knockout with some singing Muay Thai knees in the third frame. Overeem and Hunt both out-earned welterweight champ Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in the main event with $750,000 each according to the official salaries disclosed by the NSAC courtesy of ESPN’s Brett Okamoto:

Two other high-profile fighters on the card obviously did not, however, as scheduled interim lightweight title bout particiants Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson missed out some massive paydays.

“The Eagle” was forced of the awaited title fight due to complications with his weight cut, costing him a lofty $500,000 in the process, while “El Cucuy” could have earned the same if he won:

It wasn’t the most crowd-pleasing bout in UFC history, but welterweight champion Tyron Woodley retained his title over Stephen Thompson in a heavily questioned majority decision result in the main event of last night’s (Sat., March 4, 2017) UFC 209 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After the fight’s results were announced, fans and media members began to discuss the result, with many unsure how Woodley could win a decision while mostly moving backwards and throwing little volume while doing so for at least three rounds. UFC President Dana White agrees with them, as he told FOX Sports after the fight he had it scored in favor of ‘Wonderboy’:

“I had it 3-2. ‘Wonderboy.’”

When asked if he thought the fight might turn out to be another draw when the strange scores once again came up, White clarified the thought had never crossed his mind. He noted that one of the cageside judges scored the fifth and final round, where Woodley did do some heavy damage to Thompson, a dominant 10-8 for the champ, something White found to be ludicrous:

“I didn’t think it was gonna be a draw; I mean, from the fight that I watched, I had it 3-2 ‘Wonderboy,’ and one of the judges scored the last round 10-8, which is insane.”

But regardless of how he felt the fight should have been scored, White had to accept that Woodley won no matter what, and the fans will have to as well. Typically vague with the direction of the UFC’s plans for the deep welterweight division, White only confirmed that the win, which was Woodley’s first official defense, didn’t help his case too much:

“Tyron’s the champ, he won tonight. But you know, listen, me, the fans, everybody else – we’re not judges. The judges called him the winner tonight so he’s the winner. So we’ll see where we go from here. Listen, this fight didn’t help his case in any way, shape, or form. But I don’t know, we’ll see what happens from here.”

After a ‘Fight of the Night’-winning brawl at last November’s UFC 205, fans were expecting a repeat when Tyron Woodley met Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson once again in the main event of last night’s (Sat., March 4, 2017) UFC 209 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unfortunately, they got none of that, as Woodley and Thompson fought possibly the most cautious welterweight title fight in UFC history with Woodley taking home a highly controversial majority decision. It was yet another strange call from the judges after last year’s confusing majority draw that saw Woodley retain the belt.

The fighters have no one to blame but themselves, however, as it seemed Woodley had lost the majority of the early rounds by consistently backing up to the cage and looking to counter a pressuring but largely inactive Thompson. The champion secured a takedown and landed some subsequent ground and pound, but overall he spent the rest of the fight backing up and doing little. Thompson landed kicks but seemed to hit air with many of his punches as he also fought too cautiously, and the most significant moments of the fight came towards the end of the final round.

There, Woodley battered ‘Wonderboy’ with some huge power punches, folding him to the point it appeared the fight could be stopped. Thompson weathered the assault just as he had in the first meeting, but apparently it was enough to sway the judges’ favor. Watch the few highlights of the brutal main event bout right here:
