Three weeks later, New Jersey still unsure whether foul play marred WSOF 2 main event
World Series of Fighting 2 happened 20 days ago, and yet no one still knows why the first round of the Andrei Arlovski vs. Anthony Johnson main event appeared to have gone into unfair overtime.
According to the fight footage, the first round, which was supposed to have been five minutes long, appeared to have lasted an extra seven or eight seconds. As a result, following the fight, Nick Lembo, counsel for the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, requested official footage of the bout from NBC Sports Network, who aired WSOF 2 live on March 23, to review if something truly went wrong.
However, Lembo told MMAFighting.com on Friday that he has yet to receive footage of the fight from NBC Sports Network, and he was unsure when or if he would be receiving it.
Below is a text message exchange MMAFighting.com had with Lembo about the footage request on Friday:
Q: Did NBC send you the footage?
A: No.
Q: Any idea why?
A: Ask them. I have no way of knowing.
Q: So you’re just waiting?
A: Yes. I need the official footage, not a YouTube link. I also asked Arlovski’s attorneys for it.
Q: Have you asked them why the delay?
A: No.
Q: Final question: other than asking for the footage, is there an internal investigation of [any] sort going on, or are you waiting for the footage?
A: Step 1 would be getting the official footage.
Arlovski was dropped and almost finished in the final seconds of the round and claims that exchange broke his jaw. He would go on to lose the bout via unanimous decision.
Arlovski’s coaches at Team Jackson-Winklejohn wrote on Facebook recently that they believe the New Jersey commission made a mistake.
“The NJ athletic commission was [so] worried about the World Series of Fighting getting a new canvas and new corner pads for the cage, they almost canceled the fight Saturday night,” Jackson’s MMA wrote on Facebook after the fight. “Unfortunately they forgot to get a time keeper that was trained properly. 1st round 5min 8 sec in the Andrei fight. A devastating blow was landed after the 5min mark. It’s amazing how so much time is spent with over regulating but the simple things can cost dearly.”
