The UFC’s debut card on FOX Sports 1 continues falling into place.
Tuesday, word broke that bantamweights Urijah Faber and Yuri Alcantara will meet on the Aug. 17 event at Boston’s TD Garden. The Las Vegas Sun initially tweeted the news, which was confirmed by MMAFighting.com.
Faber (28-6), the former WEC featherweight champion, is coming off a fourth-round submission win over Scott Jorgensen in the main event of the TUF 17 Finale on April 13 in Las Vegas. The win continued a remarkable run for “The California Kid,” in which he’s dropped his last five title fights, but has won seven in a row when a title isn’t on the line.
Alcantara (28-4, 1 no-contest), meanwhile, is considerably less famous than his opponent, but he’s no joke. The Marajo, Brazil native has won 14 of his past 15 fights (minus a no-contest). His most recent victory was a knockout of Iliarde Santos at UFC on FX 8. His biggest win of note occurred in the WEC, where he knocked out Ricardo Lamas on the final WEC card in Dec. 2010.
The event in Boston, which is part of the opening day for the new FOX entity, still lacks a main event. But the Faber-Alcantara bout has been added to a list which already includes Alistair Overeem vs. Travis Browne, and bouts involving Joe Lauzon, Thiago Alves, Uriah Hall, and Conor McGregor.
