A featherweight battle between Georgi “Insane” Karakhanyan (21-3-1) and Waylon Lowe (14-4) was announced Thursday by the World Series of Fighting, completing the five-bout main card for its next show.
WSOF 5 takes place on Sept. 14 in Atlantic City, N.J., at the Revel Casino Hotel and will air live on NBC Sports at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Karakhanyan was a professional soccer player both in Europe and later with the Major Indoor Soccer League’s San Diego Sockers before starting in MMA. He competed in two Bellator tournaments, in both cases losing to the eventual champion, Joe Warren and Patricio “Pitbull” Freire. Since the loss to Freire, he’s won his last seven fights, including getting his hand raised over Din Thomas, Hiroyuki Takaya and Micah Miller.
Lowe fought four times in UFC in 2010 and 2011, going 2-2. He knocked out Cameron Dollar in the first round in March in his WSOF debut.
Lowe, a wrestling specialist, was a three-time NCAA Division II wrestling champion for the University of Findlay, in Ohio, capturing laurels in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
The main card also includes a heavyweight main event of Andrei Arlovski (19-10) vs. Mike Kyle (20-9-1), a heavyweight battle with Rolles Gracie (8-1) vs. Derrick “Caveman” Mehman (15-5), and semifinals in a tournament to crown the first WSOF middleweight champion with David Branch (12-3) vs. Danillo Villefort (14-4) and Elvis “The King” Mutapcic (13-2) vs. Jesse “JT Money” Taylor (26-9).
