MMA Fighting brings you UFC on FOX 9 play-by-play and more for the Johnson vs. Benavidez 2 fight card. Tonight’s event is headlined by a fight between UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez. This bout is scheduled for five, five-minute rounds. Also appearing on the main card are Uirjah Faber vs. Michael McDonald, Chad Mendes vs. Nik Lentz, and Joe Lauzon vs. Mac Danzig. Tonight’s fights take place at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

Darren Uyenoyama vs. Alptekin Ozkilic
Round 1: Mike Beltran is the referee for this flyweight fight. I’ll be referring to these guys by their initials for simplicity’s sake. DU shoots for a single let about a minute in. AO grabs a front headlock, takes him to the mat. DU still holding on to the leg, gets AO to let go, and improves his position. They scramble to their feet, DU lands a knee. They end up back on the mat. Another scramble ends up with AO in top position. AO postures up, scrambles to his feet. Midway through the round. DU throwing a head kick and front kicks. DU shoots a single, scrambles all the way across the cage, ends with AO on top. After about a minute in that position, AO lands a couple punch. Otherwise, not much doing. Back to their feet in the final seconds. DU throwing kicks again. MMAFighting scores the round for Ozkilic, 10-9.
Round 2: DU shoots for another takedown right away, which AO sprawls. DU pretty determined to land a takedown with that single. Another attempt, AO rolls with it and ends up in top position. AO throws a flurry of punches, then stands up. Back to the ground. AO in DU’s guard. Not much happening. Hecklers in the crowd calling for a standup. The Beard obliges. two minutes left. DU goes for a single, AO slips away. Back to the mat. DO gets out and gets back to his feet. See a pattern here? AO checks a DU head kick and rifles a crisp right hand. Round 3: AO lands a the most solid blow of the fight, a big right hand, and we’ve got some action. AO chases him, starts winging punches, but DU grabs him in a Thai clinch. It turns into a DU takedown. AO tries to work it into a triangle arm bar, but DU escapes and gets back to his feet. He throws a wicked spinning heel kick that just misses. DU tries to bring it to the mat again, but AO won’t oblige. Midway through the round. AO throwing rights, but DU mostly staying out of range. DU has goaded AO back onto the mat again. DU throwing elbows and nearly gets an arm bar as AO stands up. AO throws a low kick, then lands a takedown. Standing again. Final 30 seconds. AO feigns a spinning back fists, DU answers with one of his own and just misses. Fight ends. MMAFighting scores the round 10-9 for Ozkikic (29-28 Ozkilic overall).

Abel Trujillo vs. Roger Bowling
Round 1: John McCarthy is the referee for this lightweight fight. Bowling throws a leg kick and Trujilio responds with a four-punch combo. Trujilio again winging shots, including a right to the face which makes solid contact. Trujilio goes for a takedown, gets it, but Bowling spins out. Back to their feet with Trujilo going for a single. Bowling pulls it to the mat, gets top position, and works for a choke. Briefly standing in the clinch, but Trujiio gets down to his knees. Standing now, Trujilio lands a big knee, and just misses with a flying knee. Bowling answers a leg kick with a right hand. Trujilio wobbles Bowling with a right, lands a left, then two knees. Trujilo shows absolutely no fear in rushing right in for his strikes. Late takedown. Takedown with a minute left, Trujilo in side control and landing knees. Lands a couple big right hands and a knee to the chest as Bowling gets back to his feet. Bowling cut around his left eye. MMAFighting scores the round for Trujilo, 10-9.
Round 2: Bowling connects with a solid leg kick, but the off-balance Trujilo still managed to land a right hand as both tumble to the mat. Trujilo opens up with an absolutely brutal series of left and right hands, lands a knee which looks in real-time like it might have been an illegal shot to the head, but replay shows landed to the body. Bowling is up, but he eats a few more punches and McCarthy waves off the bout.

Sam Stout vs. Cody McKenzie
Round 1: Herb Dean is the referee for this lightweight fight. McKenzie rushes right into a Stout flurry. McKenzie pulls back, throws a low kick, goes for a takedown, and gets it. Stout does a reasonable job tying him up, although McKenzie does land a sharp elbow. Back to their feet, still clinched, McKenzie chases him across the cage, pursuing a takedown. They’re clinched along the fence. McKenzie lands a knee. Two minutes in. McKenzie connects with a straight left. Lands a right to the chin. Stout checks a head kick. Stout with a low kick. Stout throws a wicked body kick, but McKenzie recovers. A combo drops McKenzie. He gets up and eats aright hand to the solar plexus. Stout apparently lands a low blow, but McKenzie continues. Round 2: Change of pace in round two as McKenzie has slowed down, causing Stout to pursue him. Stout finally drops him with a right, but gets right back up. This continues for awhile. Stout throws a high kick and a low kick. McKenzie connects with a solid left hand. Stout with a sharp right, then sprawls a takedown. Lack of action in the final minute. Crowd jeers. Round 3: Same deal in round three as round two. Stout with a two-punch combo and a low kick. McKenzie appears to basically have mentally given up once Stout rocked him late in the first round. Stout looks like he’s having a light sparring session. Cracks him McKenzie with a right hand. McKenzie with a very half-hearted takedown attempt, which Stout quick turns into a choke. Stout releases the hold, and lands a right uppercut on their way back up. Stout continues to pepper McKenzies with punch/kick combos, then get out of range. Final minute. Stout with a right to the stomach. McKenzie shoots a single, gets Stout to the mat, and makes an awkward attempt at a leg lock of some sort. Scott Jorgensen vs. Zach Makovsky
Round 1: Mike Beltran is the referee for this flyweight fight. Jorgensen, in his flyweight debut, is more active in the early going, chasing after Makovsky and throwing two-punch combos. Makovsky, a late sub making his UFC debut, shoots a single and gets a takedown, but they’re right back up. A clinch and Jorgensen lands a knee. Makovsky lands a spinning back fist, but it doesn’t have much behind it. Makovsky throws a head kick and Jorgensen responds with a kick to the midsection. Makovsky flicking lefts and Jorgensen responds with a right to the jaw. A scramble ends with Jorgensen getting face lock on Makovsky, who’s down on one knee. Makovsky lands a short overhand left. Makovsky connects with a solid left hand which rocks Jorgensen backwards and leaves him with a bloody nose. Jorgensen shoots in, grabs undercooks, gets Makovsky to the mat, but Makovsky switches position. They scramble and Jorgensen ends up in top position, but another scramble ends up with Makovsky on top. Solid round which could go either way. MMAFighting scores the round for Makovsky, 10-9.
Round 2: Another scramble at the start of the round ends with Jorgensen getting a guillotine on Makovsky, then top control once he let go. Back to their feet a minute in. Makovsky with a takedown. Makovsky lands a right. A clinch along the fence, Jorgensen throws some knees before they break. They hit the mat again. Jorgensen in Makovsky’s half-guard. Round 3: Makovsky lands a kick to the body and grazes Jorgensen with a superman punch. Makovsky whiffs with a spinning back fist. Makovsky lands a knee. Jorgensen pushes Makovsky back into the cage and lands a quick knee to the head. Makovsky with a sweet little slam, but Jorgensen rolls with the momentum and ends up in top position. Makovsky tries to spin out and nearly gets chokes for his efforts. Back-and-forth position battle on the ground finally breaks up. Two minutes left and we’re standing again. Jorgensen connects with a two-punch combo. They hit the mat again, with Jorgensen working a coke. Makovsky manages to switch position. He nearly gets Jorgensen’s back. Bobby Green vs. Pat Healy
Round 1: Herb Dean is the referee for this lightweight fight. Lots of feints early before Green gets behind Healy and takes I’m to the mat. They’re right back up. Green’ staying just out of range and throwing counters. Now Healy’s finding his range. Healy stalks Green, gets him against the fence, shoots the double and gets a takedown. Green’s right back up. Back out to center. Green inviting Healy to throw and Healy obliges with two-punch combos. Healy landing two for every one that Green throws. Healy gets Green’s back and gets a half-hearted slam. Back standing and Healy using some dirty boxing. They break. A back-and-forth flurry ends the round. MMAFighting scores the round for Healy, 10-9.
Round 2: Green continues to move in and out. He’s landed a solid left and a big right. Green lands a pair of straight lefts and sprawls a takedown attempt. Green lands a big right. Green gets behind Healy, gets him down to one knee, is back up. Back out to center. Two minutes in. Healy finally catches Green, gets a takedown, and has his back. Green throws him head over heels off his back. Back out to center. Green continuing to stay out of range and pop Healy with counters. Healy closes the distance, presses Green up against the cage, and utilizes some dirty boxing. Healy starting to connect. Green with a front kick. Green with a takedown in the closing seconds. Round 3: Green lands several counters in the early going, including one to the jaw which momentarily stops Healy in his tracks. They clinch along the fence to a stalemate. Back out to center octagon and Green is playing his avoid-and-counter game again. Healy’s nose is cut open and Green is cut under his left eye. Healy gets Green’s back, lands a bunch of lefts, but Green again tosses him overboard. More clinch work. Green again circles out to center. Healy connects on a left, Green with a single, but can’t finish the TD. Changes it to a double and gets it this time. Danny Castillo vs. Edson Barboza
Round 1: Mike Beltran is the referee for this featherweight fight. Barboza throwing on-point jabs and lands a crisp spinning back kick to the midsection. Castillo’s giving up no quarter though. He tags Barboza something fierce with a monster right hand to the ear, follows up, lands a takedown, and gets a rear-naked choke. The crowd absolutely explodes for the hometown favorite. Castillo raining down left hands. Barboza trying to weather the storm. Barboza tries to tie him up for a triangle. Trying to get back to his feet, but Castillo keeps landing big lefts. Castillo mounts his back and has a tight choke briefly, but he slips out. Now Castillo is landing lefts. One minute left. Barboza manages to get a heel hook briefly, but Castillo is back at it. Barboza cut wide open, but he’s throwing up kicks. Huge ovation at the end of the round. MMAFIghting scores the round for Castillo, 10-8.
Round 2: We’ll find out soon if Castillo punched himself out in round one. Barboza throws one of his patented brutal leg kicks. Then another one. And another one. And a fourth. Barboza sprawls a takedown. Castillo with a left which opens a fresh cut on Barboza’s forehead. Barboza misses a low spinning kick, slips, then darts out of the way before Castillo can capitalize. Barboza with another leg kick and flicks a front kick. Barboza wobbles Castillo with a big right hands. Castillo hits the mat. Barboza maneuvers into a deep choke. Castillo gets out of it. 30 seconds left. Castillo trying to rideo out the round. Barboza stands. Barboza whiffs on a big high kick. Barboza with a brutal kick and another one to the solar plexus. 90 seconds left. Barboza tags Castillo with a left on the button. Barboza wobbles Castillo with a spinning back kick. Court McGee vs. Ryan LaFlare
Round 1: Herb Dean is your referee. LaFlare scores a takedown in the opening minute. McGree gets back to his feet. LaFlare initiating most of the action in the standup, but McGee connects on an uppercut which opens a cut near LaFlare’s left temple. They hit the mat, scramble back to their feet. LaFlare lands a couple big knees in the clinch, but LaFlare with an awkward spinning back kick attempt, McGee gets his back, but can’t do anything with it. MMAFighting scores the round for LaFlare, 10-9.
Round 2: Neither man gains an advantage in the first minute, as each are throwing single strikes and moving out. They trade a solid pair of kicks before LaFlare changes levels and gets a takedown. Back to their fet. McGee catches a LaFlare kick and shoves him to the mat. They continue to trade for the bulk of the round, and their shots are landing: LaFlare has a huge cut over his left eye now, and McGee’s got blood all over his face. Round 3: McGee appears the fresher fighter in round three, landing solid punches and scoring a takedown off a single. A scramble hits the mat, McGee goes for a choke but can’t sink it in.
