The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) overturned Jessica Eye’s controversial split decision victory over Sarah Kaufman into a “no decision” this past weekend, rewriting history nearly four months after UFC 166 took place.
On Monday, TDLR officials explained that the reasoning behind their ruling was that Eye tested positive for a “prohibited drug” in the aftermath of the bout.
Commission officials would not elaborate on the specific nature of the drug, although Eye has been fined $1,875 and issued a one-year “fully probated suspension” retroactive to January 22, 2014 — the date of the TDLR’s administrative decision.
Eye is presently scheduled to fight Alexis Davis in a pivotal preliminary card match-up on February 22, 2014 at UFC 170.
According to a commission representative, a probated suspension constitutes “a suspension that is not enforced as long as the conditions of probation are met,” and would effectively serve as a warning, allowing Eye to fight at UFC 170 as long as she does not break the terms of her sentence.
Eye tweeted her reaction to the news Monday morning, writing, “I PROMISE YOU I AM NOT SUSPEND and WILL BE FIGHTING FEB 22 as scheduled !! @UFC don’t believe everything you read online!”
UFC officials have yet to comment on the situation.
