This is the UFC 172 undercard live blog for the UFC 172 event at the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore.
There will be five fights on the UFC 172 undercard. Joseph Benavidez vs. Tim Elliott, Takanori Gomi vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg, Jessamyn Duke vs. Bethe Correia, Danny Castillo vs. Charlie Brenneman, and Chris Beal vs. Patrick Williams will be featured on the prelims.

Chris Beal vs. Patrick Williams
Round 1: Both fighters open orthodox. Williams charges in for a fake takedown and later scores an outside leg kick. Beal scores with a right hand as Williams charges in. Williams blitzes again and lands an illegal knee in the process, so referee Herb Dean temporarily halts the action. Another blitz from Williams, this time landing an outside leg kick. The two have a flurry where Beal cracks Williams with a right, Williams retreats. Sneaky uppercut from Williams finds the mark, which gives him a double right after that. Beal is able to score with an underhook to stand and they do. Beal charges down Williams this time and the two trade hooks. Williams catches a body kick from Beal and uses it to plat him on the mat. Beal now working from his full guard, but stands again off of the underhook. Williams throws an uppercut that misses and Beal responds with a missed hook of his own. Both fighters now swinging wildly and missing until Beal scores with a nice right hand a knee.

Round 2: Beal takes center of the cage and the two collide off of another Williams blitz, but Beal is able to connect with a knee before the clinch break. Williams cracks Beal with a body kick, but he catches it again and tries to wing hard right hands to marginal effect. Williams is back tracking against the fence and Beal launches – with no set up – a perfectly placed flying knee that puts Williams out completely cold. Impressive.

Danny Castillo vs. Charlie Brenneman
Round 1: Dan Miragliotta is the referee in charge of the action. Both fighters open orthodox and Castillo paws with a jab to the body and outside leg kick. Brenneman tries to counter with a right off ofa Castillo leg kick, but misses. Brenneman is in on a double against Castillo against the fence and manages to kick out the post leg, putting Castillo on his back in side control. Brenneman moves upside down on Castillo and nearly locks up an armbar, but Castillo goes base down and stands, getting behind Brenneman as the position themselves against the fence. Castillo tries to lift Brenneman, can’t because of a fence grab and in a scramble, Brenneman fails to get on top. They separate. Brenneman tries to time a single and can’t get it. Castillo scores with a right to the body, but Brenneman responds with a left of his own. Brenneman in on a double again against the fence, wrapping Castillo’s legs, putting him down. Castillo stands with Brenneman attached to his back. Castillo hits a slide by and is trying to take Brenneman’s back. Castillo sinks a partial rear naked choke, but it’s not tight enough.

Round 2: Castillo feints a few level changes before throwing an absolute bomb of an overhand right that connects flush on Brenneman’s chin, putting him out instantly. Another sensational KO.

Jessamyn Duke vs. Bethe Correia
Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Kevin Mulhall. Both fighters open orthodoxc. First contact is from Correia with an outside leg kick. And again. And another while Duke paws with a range-finding jab. Three-punch combo from Correia lands at the very end. They briefly clinch and Duke scores with a couple of knees, but nothing particularly hard. Spinning back fist from Correia only partially finds the mark, just the same with Duke’s lead uppercut. Correira bullies Duke into the fence. Duke tries a trip and gets it only a second before Correia is able to stand. Lunging jab from the Brazilian. Correia continues to attack the lead leg of Duke. The two exchange in a shirt flurry, both getting tagged. Good jab from Correia stops the Brazilian in he tracks.

Round 2: Duke active with and scoring with the jab, but Correia lands two nice right hooks swarming in. Correia pressuring Duke against the fence, but scores a nice uchi mata and takes Correia to the mat. Correia, however, immediately wins the scramble and ends up on top in side control. Duke is eventually able to stand and get a hip toss, but Correia is back up and working. Correia using punching sequences to either land or keep Duke’s offense muted. Good knee from Duke in a brief clinch. Excellent left hook from Correia at the end of a combo.

Round 3: Two hard hooks score for Correia to start the frame. Duke doing all the pressuring, but Correia is getting off first with her strikes. Decent knee from Duke after a leg kick from Correia. Good body shot from Correia at the beginning of a punching combo. Correia scores a couple of punches and Duke counters with a good knee up the middle. Hard outside leg kick from Correia and decent five-punch combo. Duke trips Correia to the mat and seemingly has her back, but Correia again wins the scramble and gets on top. There’s a lack of activity and the referee stands them up. The two trade punches before the round expires.

Takanori Gomi vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg
Round 1: The referee in charge of the action is Herb Dean. Gomi opens southpaw and Vallie-Flagg is orthodox. The American presses Gomi into the fence, but Gomi reverses and now they’re separated. Gomi standing in the pocket swinging, but so far not connecting with much. There’s a one-two from Gomi. Two good rights from Vallie-Flagg find the mark and now he’s pressing forward on a bloodied Gomi. Vallie-Flagg misses on a kick and slips. Gomi follows him to the ground, working from the American’s open guard. Vallie-Flagg inches to the fence, but Gomi gets underneath and takes the back. He attempts a rear naked choke, but it’s not tight at all. Gomi tries it again, but it’s sloppy and the American stands. Hard outside leg kicks from Gomi score, plus a right hand. Good teep from Vallue-Flagg, but Gomi lands with a right. Fairly close round.

Round 2: Gomi looks winded to start the second round. Hard right and from Vallue-Flagg and he’s pressuring Gomi hard. Decent clipping left hook for the American, but Gomi cracks Vallie-Flagg with two of his own. Gomi switching stances now as Vallie-Flagg pressures him. Gomi presses the American into the fence and eats a knee for his efforts. Ripping body shot from Gomi. And three hooks lands for the Japanese fighter, but Vallie-Flagg is still pressuring forard, landing on occasion. Lunging cross from Vallie-Flagg finds the mark, but Gomi cracks him with another hook to the body. Gomi baiting Vallue-Flagg and nails him with a right hand. The American attempts a trip, but can’t get it and does score with a leaping right straight.

Round 3: The American right away goes back to pressuring and Gomi is doing his best to counter, driving a left hook to the liver. They clinch and Gomi fails on a trip, but abandons it. Gomi slips and Vallie-Flagg follows him to the ground, but he stands again, getting double underhooks against the fence.Nice hard right hand for Vallie-Flagg. The American is having more success now. Hard jab from Gomi, plus two very hard right hands. The American’s face is a disaster. Vallie-Flagg is bleeding profusely now. The two jockey for position along the fence and Vallie-Flagg scores a late pick up-drop takedown. Gomi reverses and ends up in the American’s guard to end the round.
