The return to middleweight was a fruitful one for Nate Marquardt. In addition to getting the first round submission win in the main event at UFC Fight Night 43 over James Te Huna, Marquardt pocketed $50,000 in a Performance of the Night bonus.
Marquardt was never much in trouble, dominating Te Huna for much of the round before securing an armbar as Te Huna pushed through a mount escape. Te Huna drops to 16-8 in MMA while Marquardt rises to 33-13-2.
Also claiming a bonus for $50,000 is Charles Oliveira for his second round submission of Hatsu Hioki. In a back and forth grappling contest, it was the Brazilian who ended up the victor as he locked up an esoteric submission that seemed to be a combination of an Anaconda choke and Peruvian Necktie towards the end of the second frame. Oliveira’s record jumps to 18-4 with 1 no-contest while Hioki slides to 27-8-2.
Last, but certainly not least, both Gian Villante and Sean O’Connell also earned Performance of the Night bonuses for their opening bout on the card. Villante won via split decision and moves to 12-5 in MMA while O’Connell drops to 15-6.
