UFC 176 canceled after Jose Aldo’s injury

The UFC has decided to cancel an entire pay-per-view card after featherweight champion Jose Aldo was forced out of the main event with an injury.

Aldo, who was scheduled to defend his 145-pound title in a rematch against Chad Mendes at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 2, suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him out of training for three to four weeks, and the promotion decided to cancel the whole event.

The UFC announced on Tuesday that Aldo vs. Mendes is expected to take place late this year, and the other fights originally scheduled for the pay-per-view card will be moved to future cards. UFC 176 is the second UFC pay-per-view card cancelled after the UFC 151 incident in 2012.

The other bouts initially planned for UFC 176 were Ronaldo Souza vs. Gegard Mousasi, Zach Makovsky vs. Jussier da Silva, Fabricio Camoes vs. Gray Maynard, Lorenz Larkin vs. Derek Brunson, Bobby Green vs. Abel Trujillo, Bethe Correia vs. Shayna Baszler, James Vick vs. Valmir Lázaro, Danny Castillo vs. Tony Ferguson, Beneil Dariush vs. Tony Martin and Alex Garcia vs. Matt Dwyer.

The next UFC pay-per-view is scheduled for August 30 in Sacramento, Calif. UFC 177 will be headlined by a rematch for the bantamweight title between T.J. Dillashaw and Renan Barao.
