Alexander Gustafsson vows to get his belt back in return

Alexander Gustafsson is disappointed.

“The Mauler” impressed against Jon Jones at UFC 165, but didn’t get the immediate rematch he was hoping for. After a dominant victory over Jimi Manuwa, the Swedish light heavyweight earned another shot at the UFC gold, but was forced out of UFC 178 with a torn meniscus.

“Thank you all for the support. I will be back stronger than ever and get MY belt. Jones, I see that you are happy, but if you get passed DC, your nightmare will be back and more motivated than ever,” Gustafsson wrote on Facebook.

He also included a video message to his fans.

“I got a knee injury. It’s not very serious, but I need to take care of it,” said Gustafsson. “It’s a small issue that has been with me. It’s not a long recovery time – just a few weeks.”

Daniel Cormier, a Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champion, will replace Gustafsson against Jones on Sept. 27 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and “The Mauler” plans to watch the light heavyweight title fight.

“I’m disappointed, I really wanted to fight at 178 but I can’t,” he said. “I will watch it, for sure. It’s a great card.”
