With his fighting status in limbo, Wanderlei Silva remains hopeful he’ll get a chance to settle up with Chael Sonnen in the Octagon.
“I think he retired just for now, I think after finishing his suspension, he’s gonna (come) back,” Silva told Submission Radio. “I hope this fight is gonna happen.”
“I think him and [Vitor] Belfort are just the two good fights that have a reason to happen for me.”
The pair were slated to fight Jul. 5 at UFC 175 before they each ran afoul of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Sonnen retired and was subsequently suspended from fighting for two years by the NAC after failing back-to-back drug tests. Silva reportedly fled from a commission official sent to obtain a sample for his own drug test, effectively failing it. Silva appeared before the NAC in June, but no ruling on a punishment was made.
“Yeah this is bad for everyone, bad for him, bad for me, bad for the fans who want so much that fight,” said Silva. “But I’m gonna (be) waiting for him.”
“He (Chael Sonnen) has just one way to fight, just take down then on the top of the ground. And for me, I try to knock out, you know. I like to fight (in the) stand up and that what was happen. I’m gonna try to knock him out, he would try and hold me the whole round.”
With Sonnen booked to headline Metamoris 4 Aug. 9 against Andre Galvao, Silva wouldn’t rule out settling to face ‘The American Gangster’ in the professional grappling promotion.
“Yeah, why not? I never think about that but I think it’s a good idea. I accept to do that with him.”
