INDIANAPOLIS – Unless a planned appeal proves effective, Chael Sonnen is facing a one-year suspension and $2,500 fine due to his failed drug test at this past month’s UFC 117 event.

But UFC president Dana White knows the fallout from that punishment goes much deeper and affects not only the former title challenger’s earning power but also his relevancy in an ever-changing middleweight division.

That’s why, White said, the UFC hasn’t and won’t issue further penalties to fighters once state athletic commissions levy their own punishments.
