The UFC’s debut card in Phoenix gets heavier by the day.
FOXSports.com reported Friday that heavyweights Matt Mitrione and Gabriel Gonzaga will square off at UFC on FOX 13 at U.S. Airways Center on Dec. 13.
The news arrives on the heels of the announcement of a 265-pound bout between former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem and Stefan Struve; and there has been loud talk of a fight between formerUFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and rising contender Stipe Miocic.
Mitrione (8-3) has won two in a row, the most recent being a 41-second finish of Derrick Lewis earlier this month. Seven of his eight victories have come by knockout.
Gonzaga (16-8), meanwhile, is a veteran of the division. While he’s never quite regained the heights his 2007 heyday, in which he knocked out Mirko Cro Cop and challenged Randy Couture for the heavyweight title, Gonzaga is a tough out for anyone. He’s 2-1 in his current UFC stint and coming off a decision loss to Miocic on Jan. 25.
