LAS VEGAS – Travis Browne channeled the old-school style of fighters like Mark Coleman on Saturday night.

Browne used some schoolyard-bully ground-and-pound to finish off Brendan Schaub at UFC 181. Referee Mario Yamasaki called off the heavyweight fight at the Mandalay Bay Events Center at 4:50 of the first round.

“That’s what I do,” a to-the-point Browne (17-2-1) said.

Early in the round, Schaub (10-5) found success with a takedown and then a trip. But he got caught with a huge uppercut as he rushed in during a mid-round exchange, and then things got bad for the Coloradan.

Browne got the mount and rained down punches. Schaub managed to flip over, but Browne simply continued raining down shots until the fight was waved off. He then taunted Schaub, with whom he had words leading up to the fight.

The victory got Browne back into the win column in the wake of losing a No. 1 contender’s fight to Fabricico Werdum earlier in the year.

“That’s all I expected, was to win,” said Browne, who has won four of his past five bouts. “I’m a sore loser. I sacrificed too much for this.”

It was Browne’s 13th career KO/TKO win.
