After TKO victory, Travis Browne mum about the words he had for Brendan Schaub

LAS VEGAS – Before Travis Browne and Brendan Schaub were loosed on each other at UFC 181, there was some pretty harsh words between camps circulating in the media.

Schaub criticized Browne for his move from Jackson-Winkeljohn’s in Albuquerque to the Glendale Fight Club with Edmond Tarverdyan, and Tarverdyan responded in kind on The MMA Hour last week. Browne’s new coach expressed his opinion of Schaub.

“Honestly, somebody asked me if he can fight,” Tarverdyan said. “I think he can’t fight for sh*t. That’s what I think.”

There’s been a smoldering beneath the surface between the two camps since, and when Browne finished Schaub in the first round via a ground assault, the Hawaiian leaned into say a few words in Schaub’s ear.

What was it?

“There’s been a little bit of banter going back between our camp and him,” Browne said at the UFC 181 post-fight press conference. “When I get to know somebody like Edmond, and know what kind of a coach he is — and not only that, but what kind of man he is — it makes it personal for me.

“So at the end, that was between him and I and we’ll keep in there. You know, he came up and he apologized for saying some of the stuff he did. It is what it is, but we’re moving forward.”

Though Browne was hesitant to share his moment with Schaub, he did divulge that he’d have his eye on next week’s heavyweight tilt between Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic — and more directly, that he wouldn’t mind fighting Fabricio Werdum again. It was Werdum that defeated Browne in a No. 1 contender bout back in April, which prompted Browne to switch things up in his camp.

“I’m not a big fan of the rankings because, I’m ranked third, but I hate being ranked third because to me I’m just the third loser in a sport that has one heavyweight champion,” he said. “It just kind of depends. The heavyweight division, with the interim belt and with Cain [Velasquez] being hurt…it’s just kind of shifty a little bit. So anybody can go in and fight anybody at any given time. If the champ is not able to make it in June, then who’s Werdum going to fight?

“I don’t mind that rematch. Please give me that fight back, especially if it’s for the belt. I’d love that.”

Werdum then said that if Velasquez is able to fight Werdum next, he wouldn’t want to wait around for a title shot.

“I fight for a living, and I want to go out there and scrap a little bit,” he said. “I’m not trying to just sit on the coach for a year. I want to go out there and earn some money. I have bills to pay.”
