A sizzling match-up between ranked lightweights is now on the books, as Edson Barboza and Michael Johnson have agreed to meet on Feb. 22 as co-main event of UFC Fight Night 61. The UFC announced the bout on Sunday.
Barboza (15-2), the No. 6 lightweight on the UFC’s media generated rankings, rides into the contest fresh from the biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision over Bobby Green this past November.
The 28-year-old Brazilian possesses ferocious kicks and extensive Muay Thai experience, and the upset victory over Green pushed his UFC record to a commanding 9-2 mark.
He’ll now look to continue that momentum against Johnson (15-8), a TUF 12 runner-up who’s ridden a three-fight win streak into the No. 12 spot on the UFC’s lightweight rankings.
Johnson, 28, sat out a majority of 2014 due to injury and at times has struggled with inconsistency in the past. Of late though the Blackzilian product appears to have turned a corner, having beaten Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau, and Melvin Guillard in succession.
