Mark Munoz meets Luke Barnatt in Manila, says he will retire after bout

Mark Munoz is calling it quits. But not before he takes a fight in his family’s homeland.

Munoz announced Tuesday at the UFC’s Manila press conference that he will retire following his bout against Luke Barnatt at UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Faber on May 16 in the Philippines, according to multiple reports. “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” said he would hang up the gloves regardless if he wins or loses.

Munoz (13-6) has been in the UFC since 2009 and put up a very solid 8-6 record in the organization. The California native, who was born on a military base in Japan, has notable wins over the likes of Chris Leben, C.B. Dollaway and Demian Maia.

In his last three fights, though, Munoz has gone winless, falling to Lyoto Machida, Gegard Mousasi and Roan Carneiro all by finish. At UFC 184 on Feb. 28 in Los Angeles, Carneiro submitted Munoz with a rear-naked choke in just 1:40.

Munoz, 37, has never fought in the Philippines. This will be the UFC’s first trip to the country and Munoz is the promotion’s most well-known fighter of Filipino descent.

Barnatt (8-2) was recently pulled from UFC Fight Night: Mendes vs. Lamas on April 4 when his opponent Clint Hester broke his foot. Barnatt, 26, has lost his last two fights after winning three in a row in the UFC.

UFC Fight Night 66 is headlined by a fight between two of the best lighter weight fights of all time, Frankie Edgar and Urijah Faber. In the co-main event, Mousasi meets Costas Philippou. The card takes place at Mall of Asia Arena, which has a capacity of more than 16,000.
