Walmart will sell Ronda Rousey’s new book on its website, just not in stores. At least not right away.
A report from the New York Post last week stated that Walmart had deemed Rousey too violent and would not be carrying her book, “My Fight/Your Fight,” at retail locations.
Walmart spokesperson Danit Marquardt would not comment on the reason Rousey’s book will not be on shelves.
“There are a variety of factors that we look at when determining what items to offer our customers,” Marquardt told MMAFighting.com. “At this point, we’ve chosen to offer this particular title to our customers online. We will continue to watch how customers respond.”
Marquardt said that Walmart has been “preparing for the release” of the book since September 2014. It is currently available for pre-order on Walmart.com. When the book is officially released May 12, Marquardt said customers can purchase it at Walmart stores using the company’s site-to-store feature.
Marquardt said the selection in retail locations is only an “abbreviated assortment” compared to the Walmart website.
“Our average Walmart supercenters sell 150,000 items whereas Walmart.com has 7 million items,” she said.
Rousey, 28, is the biggest star in the UFC right now, riding high off two straight victories in under 20 seconds and multiple rules in blockbuster movies. Rousey beat Cat Zingano to retain her belt via submission in just 14 seconds at UFC 184 in February. She topped her previous performance, defeating Alexis Davis by TKO in 16 seconds last July.
On the silver screen, Rousey’s “Furious 7” just came out last week and she’ll have a major role in “Entourage,” which opens wide in June. Last year, “Rowdy” made her Hollywood debut in “The Expendables 3.” Next month, she’ll begin filming action flick “Mile 22” in a lead role.
Rousey also made a cameo appearance at Wrestlemania 31 last month alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. As for inside the Octagon, Rousey returns against Bethe Correia at UFC 190 on Aug. 1 in Rio de Janeiro.
