Eddie Gordon vs. Chris Dempsey
Round 1: Liam Kerrigan is the third man as we kick off the prelims. They touch them up. Gordon uncorks a right hand off the bat, and they roll to the fence. Dempsey standing in, and trading — bam, he takes a right hand square. Gordon wheels around, moving along fence. Now Dempsey changes levels and shoots on Gordon, but can’t get the takedown. They go to fence. Gordon reverses and grabs Dempsey’s leg. Can’t get the takedown, and they peel apart. Back to center. Again Dempsey ducks under and tries for the takedown, but “Truck” ain’t budging. Back to center, with Dempsey sizing up. He eats another right hand which snaps his head back. Still, Dempsey ducks his head down and shoots in on Gordon again; he is thwarted, and back up they come. Dempsey has no problem standing in the pocket and swinging as they exchange again along fence. Once again Gordon gets the better of the exchange, but Dempsey’s chin is solid. They clinch, and Gordon gets his knees up some. Back to center, and again Dempsey plants and swings. And again, he gets rocked by a Gordon right hand. Dempsey pressed on. He ties Gordon up on fence, and tries for a trip. Can’t get it, and the round ends in the toil. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Gordon, 10-9.
Round 2: Dempsey stalks in, and Gordon greets him with a combo. As Dempsey goes low for a takedown he slips, and Gordon pounces with a punch. Dempsey lunges forward again, the kid keeps coming, and Gordon sends a right down the hatch. Still, Dempsey presses on the fence and that’s where they ties up. Neither man budges, and they roll back to center. Good ranging right hand from Gordon. Dempsey still taking the brunt of the exchanges, but then again, he’s still bringing it. He goes low for takedown, but Gordon this time reverses him and dumps him on his back. Immediately to side control for Gordon, and plants his hulk into Dempsey’s solar plexus. Nothing much happening on the ground, and Dempsey gets back to his feet. Crowd lets up a cheer. Gordon shoots back in on fence, and puts Dempsey’s back on the links. Again, no room for anything, so they separate. Good combo there from Dempsey, who then follows up with a solid right hand. Good exchange on fence, as Dempsey this time lands a couple of looping shots in on “Truck.” Some swelling on Dempseys’ eye, and he’s huffing some air. Gordon with his hands down a bit. And on cue, Dempsey rolls in for takedown — and finally, he gets it. Right at the end of the round. Gordon scoots to the fence, and that’s where the second round ends. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Gordon, 10-9 (20-18 overall)
Round 3: Third round, and they meet in center. Both wave jabs out, before Dempsey winds up and throws the bigger stuff. Can’t land. Gordon now with a takedown, and as he does Dempsey grabs his neck. Too sweaty and no good angle. Both pop back up. Dang, they both swing big at center, and Gordon’s head snaps back with the impact of the last blow. Ever-coveting that takedown, Dempsey shoots in again, and once again, nothing doing. Nice little right han there from Gordon, who strafed Dempsey from range. Dempsey again puts his head down and sells out for a single-leg, but Gordon turns stiff on him and ends up grabbing his back on cage wall. They waltz around, and Gordon lets go. Back to center. Gordon backs away and sets up. As he’s done all fight, Dempsey moves forward. He throws a combo and tries for takedown. Rinse, repeat. And again Gordon returns the favor and dumps Dempsey to the canvas, and goes to work in his guard. That doesn’t last long, as Dempsey bounces back to his feet. Big winging punches by Dempsey, slow lunging things, but he’s connecting. Instead of keeping that pressure on, he defaults to a takedown and this time gets it. He tries to advance, and Gordon gets up — then gets dumped back down again. Now Dempsey in side control, and is dropping punches on Gordon. Little turn of the tables here late. Dempsey’s fans appreciate it as the fight ends. MMA Fighting scores R3 for Dempsey, 10-9 (29-28 overall).
UFC on FOX 15 official scorecard: Chris Dempsey def. Eddie Gordon via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Diego Brandao vs. Jimy Hettes
Round 1: Ref is Big Dan Miragliotta. Should be a good scrap here. They touch gloves, and Hettes circles. Leg kick from Brandao, and another. The third one Hettes catches and trips Brandao to the mat. But the Brazilian is right back up. They tied up on the fence, and Brandao throws Hettes down — but, like rubber, he bounces right back up. Brandao sticking on him, though, on fence, and he lifts Hettes off his feet a second time and dumps him again. He has Hettes back, and flirts with a choke. Still has his back as they grapple, and Hettes able to roll over to his shoulders. Now Brandao in Hettes’ guard, and he’s trying to posture up. Big elbow from Brandao as he gets a momentary clearing. Hettes slickly fishes out an ankle and goes for a heel hook, and forces Brandao to roll. That enables him to get back up, and they swing back to the fence. They clinch there. Hettes with some knees to Brandao’s body. He has Brandao pressed on fence, and he’s still working the knees to the midsection. Nothing clean gettign through. Now Brandao dumps Hettes down again, and right back into his guard. Omoplata being flirted with from Hettes. Big elbows from Brandao, but he gets swept in the process. Slick Jimy Hettes, and they stand back up. Some great grappling there. Hettes corner calling for him to work angles. Hettes bleeding pretty profusely from his ear. Didn’t see how that happened, but it’s bad. Round ends there. Looks like they are calling the fight.
UFC on FOX 15 official scorecard: Diego Brandao def. Jimy Hettes via TKO (doctor stoppage)
George Sullivan vs. Tim Means
Round 1: Local New Jersey guy Sullivan gets a big pop from fans on intro. Keith Petersen the referee. They touch gloves. Means takes center, and throws a jab. Might have got poked in the eye, but they go on, and Sullivan rushes in with a sally. Body kick from Sullivan. Now looks like Sullivan took a kick low to the groin, but he says he’s alright. The southpaw Means trying to size one up, and finally throws one which misses. Good combo from Sullivan there, as Means stays tight on top. Little clinch on fence and a short elbow from Means lands. Sullivan sets up a takedown attempt with a one-two upstairs, but Means twists away. Sullivan insists, and has a single-leg, he hoists but Means is elastic and spins away. Back to center. The patty-cake of the orthodox Sullivan and the lefty Means, and Sullivan throws a solid right down the hatch. Means snaps off a leg kick, and then eats a short elbow in close. They are having brief skirmishes in the middle, isolated shots from both. Leg kick from Sullivan, and then a counter left from Means. Sullivan incorporating some nice body shots in there with his hands. They trade as the round ends, with Sullivan landing a couple of decent shots. Tough round to score. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Sullivan, 10-9.
Round 2: Means with a body kick, and then comes low with a punch. Sullivan rushes forward throwing but can’t land anything. They tie up, and Means pushes Sullivan on the fence, then steps back. Big looping right is errant from Sullivan. Sullivan may be slowing a little, the punches getting a little sloppy, a little more telegraphed. Means pursues him, and lands a nice shot that looked like it wobbles Sullivan a bit. Now after a kick attempt, Means gets him in the clinch and lands a couple of big knees, and takes Sullivan down. Sullivan in a bad spot here. Means keeping the pressure on, as Sullivan snatches for a leg. Now Means closes in and jumps on top, in side control. He lands a knee to Sullivan’s chest. Now Sullivan gets back up, and is welcomed back to his feet with a parting shot. Means turning it up here. Sullivan lurches forward and tries to deliver a big knee himself. A “Let’s Go George” chant breaks out at the Pru. Nice combo from Sullivan, and Means ate two punches. Both men getting tired. Sullivan throws a wild uppercut that misses. Now Means drops Sullivan with a short elbow! And he pounces late. Trying to end this thing. All Means from the top as the round ends. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Means, 10-9 (19-19 overall).
Round 3: Pretty entertaining fight. Sullivan to center, and Means with a leg kick. Both guys winding up their strong hand for that decisive blow, but can’t deploy. Means goes low in takedown look, but bails, and they exchange on the fence. Solid straight left from Means. Momentary clinch in the middle, and then Sullivan flies forward trying to catch Means off guard. There’s a shot from Means that ends up putting Sullivan on his back, and he jumps into side control. Means digs in, and rotates off the fence. He’s trying to create some space to operate, but so far Sullivan fending him off pretty well. Means dropping some small elbows and hammerfists, but not much behind them. They continue to rotate, as Means drops his knee over Sullivan’s thigh to pin him back. Sullivan scrambles away, but he’s still wearing Means on his back. Crowd wants a stand-up, but Means keeps on. And boom! There’s a tap. Means taps out Sullivan with an arm triangle! That’s four wins in a row for Means as a welterweight.
UFC on FOX 15 official results: Tim Means def. George Sullivan via submission (arm triangle) at 3:41 of R3
Takeya Mizugaki vs. Aljamain Sterling
Round 1: They touch gloves. Sterling tries a body kick, just to gauge. Now he ties Mizugaki up and drives him to the fence, and the Japanese fighter snatches his back there. He sort of tosses Sterling forward, and Longo’s guy rushes right back to fence. He grab’s Mizugaki’s leg and tries to dump him. Nice knee from the clinch inside, and they work their way around the cage on fence, Sterling not letting Mizugaki free. Momentarily, Mizugaki is dropped to the floor, but he’s back up, but still with Sterling attached to his torso. Now Sterling landing some knees to the inner thigh of Mizugaki. Mizugaki still in Sterling’s custody; no space whatsoever. He’s being suffocated, and the referee separates them. Back to center, and Mizugaki — his back now red from the fence — unwinds with a high combo. Sterling airs on a head kick. Quick leg kick snapped off by Sterling, and Mizugaki rapid-fire counters up top. Sterling puts his head down and drives Mizugaki to fence, and takes him down — at least for a moment. Mizugaki back up, and again they roll along fence. Sterling with Mizugaki’s back, and dumps him again. Mizugaki can’t break free from this suffocation. Then he does at the round’s end, and Sterling chops him across the chin with a right hand. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Sterling, 10-9.
Round 2: They touch gloves again. Sterling drops in low on Mizugaki’s legs, and drives him to his back on fence. Mizugaki sort of crab walking to try and stay upright, and he does get back to his feet. But once again, he’s in quarters. Sterling right there burrowing his head into Mizugaki’s thorax, posting him on fence. They break and Mizugaki tucks a swift right hand into Sterling’s temple. At center, Mizugaki thwarts a takedown from Sterling. Head kick errant from Sterling. Mizugaki may be a little gun-shy to throw, with the looming threat of the takedown. A couple of sweet kicks from Sterling land inside on the body, and there is blood coming out of Mizugaki’s nose. Now they toil on fence, and Sterling spins the Japanese fighter down to the ground. He’s got his back higher this time, and now he torques Mizugaki down trying to get him on the ground. Mizugaki trying to stay out of this danger, but can’t. Now Sterling really applying pressure. He’s got Mizugaki’s back, and is locking his legs around Mizugaki’s body. Mizugaki is spinning best he can towards Sterling to avoid the RNC. Now he has Sterling’s wrists, and he is controlling that the best he can. Sterling with tight control, but can’t get the choke in as the round ends. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Sterling, 10-9 (20-18)
Round 3: Some early exchanges, and it doesn’t take long for Sterling to get low for a takedown. Mizugaki was nearly riding him there for a moment, as Sterling patiently waited for the action to come his way. Now he has Mizugaki on the fence, and once again Mizugaki scoots his back to fence, trying to wrest himself from Sterling’s grip. And immediately we’re right back to where we were in second round — Sterling with Mizugaki’s back, trying to get a RNC. As he tries to improve, Mizugaki’s spins to the top position but leaves himself vulnerable as he does. There’s an arm triangle in play here…Sterling is squeezing…and that’s it! The tap comes in the third round. Sterling finishes Mizugaki. What a performance by the Longo-Serra fighter. Kid is moving up.
UFC on FOX 15 official results: Aljamain Sterling def. Takeya Mizugaki via submission (arm triangle) at 2:11 of R3.
Corey Anderson vs. Gian Villante
Round 1: Crowd into Villante here. They touch gloves. Nice right hand from Anderson right off. They trade leg kicks, then Anderson moves forward with a four-piece combo, and he kicked Villante good on the tail end of it. Anderson goes low with a cross, then blasts away on follow-up up top. Still, Villante initiating action, and he lands a stiff left jab. Leg ick from Villante as “Beatin 25/8” goes up top. There’s another smooth combo with bad intent from Anderson, who peppers Villante with a leg kick/punch combo. He’s finding success on the follow-ups, perhaps a step faster than the New Yorker. Leg kick there from Anderson, and Villante caught it and spun him around. Nice exchange from Villante, and he lands a damn good leg kick on the break. Follows that up with a high kick. Crowd liking the diversity there. Each time the trade in center Villante ends with a leg kick, and those are starting to add up. That lead leg of Anderson’s may start to smart soon. Good combo from Villante, who sneaks an uppercut in that time. Again, Villante blasts Anderson’s leg with a kick after a quick trade. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Villante, 10-9.
Round 2: Wow, they come out swinging. Both guys land early, and Anderson swiped Villante with a powerful little uppercut. Villante moving in, and smashes home a right hand of the combo. Again, after an exchance, Villante chops out the leg of Anderson — and again. Those are starting to toll. That time Anderson caught the leg kick and spun the New Yorker around, but nothing doing otherwise. They are standing and planting in the middle, and Anderson drops home a couple of good shots to Villante’s head. There’s some swelling there now. They trade again, this time inside stuff, with Anderson sneaking an uppercut through as Villante held his head down. Left jab from Villante, and he answers with another leg kick. Both guys still very mobile and active, showing a lot of feints. Anderson from range throws an uppercut, and then whiffs on a left cross. Villante returns fire in the pocket, and might have grazed Anderson with an uppercut. These exchanges are mean in the middle. Both guys dishing and taking damage. The round ends, and Villante walked back to his corner a little slowly. MMA Fighting scores R2 for Villante, 10-9 (20-18 overall)
Round 3: Right before the round gets rolling, the ref halts the action to cut a piece of tape from Villante’s glove. Now they go. Villante with a combo up top to leg kick, but not a lot of mustard on it that time. Anderson moving and throwing the jab. Villante over top with a right hand lands. Again, an exchange that ends with Villante slamming home a leg kick. That time Anderson wobbled a bit. Some blood on Anderson’s lip. They are meeting in the middle and throwing, and Anderson is landing a little better currently. Still, Villante moves him off his moorings with a right hand, and then rolls around. Neither of these guys looks like they will fall. Both absorbing plenty to get their offense. Stiff jab from Anderson, and then he opens up on fence with a right hand. Wow! Just when it looked like this thing was going to go the distance, Villante slams home a huge right hook that put Anderson on the dream flow. As he witlessly staggered towards the fence, Villante comes in with a couple of huge right hand follow-ups and that was that! Referee calls Villante off. What a punch to get that started.
