Top contender Fabricio Werdum caused a bit of a stir earlier this week when he called UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez ‘an American that thinks he’s Mexican.’
Exactly how Mexican Velasquez is isn’t really a point of contention, but Werdum’s comments definitely ruffled the champ’s feathers.
“I went to breakfast this morning and I ran into Cain Velasquez,” Werdum said during the third episode of the UFC 188 Embedded series. “I went over to say hi to Cain Velasquez and he said, ‘I’m not going to say hello.’ I asked, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Because you bad-mouthed me.’
“I’m sure that Cain Velasquez wanted to say hi, but someone told him something. I think it was [UFC middleweight contender] Luke Rockhold. Do you know who Luke Rockhold is? That nobody. It could be on the first episode of Embedded I said [Velasquez] wasn’t Mexican.”
Sounds about right.
“He’s American,” Werdum continued. “His parents are Mexican. So he’s not ‘Mexican, Mexican,’ but he represents Mexico well. I always said that. We have to tell the truth. So [Velasquez] said, ‘I’m not going to say hello.’ I was like, ‘Very well.’
Velasquez faces Werdum June 13 at UFC 188 in Mexico City, Mexico.

FANPOST OF THE DAY
Today’s Fanpost of the Day comes via Michael Shulski.
Most fans agree that Dan Henderson should fight Michael Bisping next. Unfortunately, the mma gods have shown that the best laid plans of Joe Silva and Zuffa often go to waste. Fighters get injured. Bisping might lose his match with a reinvigorated Thales Leites. This article considers the top three fighters Henderson could challenge next. It sets aside the possibility that Henderson is ever going to challenge for a title in favor of an approach that would generate both fan interest and a competitive fight. Of course, limiting the list to three fighters was more a means of practicality. Many fighters outside these three could be next for Henderson.
