If one judges’ card had gone the other way back in December, Claudia Gadelha would have taken a decision over Joanna J?drzejczyk and gone on to a UFC women’s strawweight title shot.
Instead, the split decision went J?drzejczyk’s way, and she went on to defeat Carla Esparza for the title.
But now it appears Gadelha is ready for what promises to be a fantastic rematch. Gadelha scored a dominant victory over former World Series of Fighting champ Jessica Aguilar at UFC 190 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday and likely earned a title shot in the process.
The judges’ scores were 30-27 across the board.
“Dana White, make my title shot happen,” Gadelha said. “I am the best strawweight in the world. I’m here to kick ass.”
Gadelha set the tone for the fight in the first round, as she pushed forward, peppered Aguilar with clean combos, and landed kicks and knees. She scored a thunderous takedown near the end of the round as well.
Round two was more of the same, including the late takedown. Somewhere along the way, Aguilar appeared to get a broken nose.
Aguilar long had a reputation as one of the world’s top strawweight fighters, but she never quite got untracked in her UFC debut. Aguilar proved plenty tough, however, and had her best round in the third, as she threw leg kicks which slowed Gadelha’s approach.
Still, though, that was nowhere near enough to alter the outcome of the fight, as Aguilar has a 10-fight win streak snapped.
