Pic: Ilir Latifi vs. Sean O’Connell is apparently for the UFC light heavyweight title

Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2 seems like a cool fight, but the real UFC light heavyweight championship is being contested between Ilir Latifi and Sean O’Connell.

If you were watching the UFC Fight Night 81weigh-ins, you obviously kept a close eye on the big championship fight scheduled for Sunday evening. Wait, T.J. Dillashaw and Dominick Cruz? Didn’t know they were fighting or that the UFC had brought over the bantamweight division.

I’m talking about THE main event of the night. Ilir Latifi and Sean O’Connell are fighting for what is undeniably Latifi’s light heavyweight title. I know this because the Fox Sports team put up this graphic during the weigh-ins.

Latifi is coming off a successful title defense against Hans Stringer, who may or may not have been played by Alan Rickman (RIP) in Die Hard. The Swede was presumably awarded the UFC LHW title after Jon Jones was stripped due to his troublesome behavior outside the Octagon. Daniel Cormier wasn’t deemed fit to assume the position as champion since he’d both lost to Jones and hadn’t faced Latifi.

O’Connell has won his last two, including a ferocious knockout of Anthony Perosh in Australia, making him the lineal king of Hippopotamuses. I consider this vanquishing worthy of a title shot against the almighty Latifi.

The champ is going to be in the building tomorrow night. And he’s bringing the sledgehammer. Tune in to UFC Fight Pass at 6 PM ET/3 PM PT for full coverage of the real main event of the evening, plus several “postlims” on Fox Sports 1.
