Stephen Thompson made a huge statement in the main event of UFC Fight Night 82 last night (Sat., Feb. 6, 2016) inside MGM Grand in Las Vegas, taking out former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks with strikes in the very first round.

“Wonderboy” came into this high profile contest with “Bigg Rigg” a winner of five straight, while the latter was looking to shake off the memory of a porous UFC 192 weight cut back in October.
With both men looking to move into title contention at 170 pounds, it was Thompson who had his hand raised in glorious fashion. The kickboxing import showcased his skills in karate early and defended the initial takedown from the All-American wrestler Hendricks.
Hendricks appear to be in the best shape of his professional career, but it was his reluctance to pursue Thompson that played into his downfall. Once Thompson knew that he had the upperhand on Hendricks, he went in for the kill with a body kick and several punches.
The South Carolina native is now poised to challenge for Robbie Lawler’s 170-pound title. Whether UFC decides to give it to him, or Tyron Woodley, is another story.
Hendricks, meanwhile, drops to 1-2 in his last three outings.
