UPDATE: Former NCAA wrestler Robin Olson has admitted to KSBY News in a follow-up interview on Monday that his original mountain lion attack story was false. The original story is below.

Former NCAA wrestler Robin Olson survived a mountain lion attack in San Luis Obispo, California last Saturday evening, according to KSBY News (H/T Fightland). Olson and his son were on a hike when they encountered the animal. Olson’s son fled the scene immediately.

According to the former wrestler, the mountain lion lunged at him, and then he captured the cat in a headlock, causing the neck to break, killing it in the process.

“I got lucky,” he said. “I just held on for life. I was holding on to her neck, and she was scratching me.

“It’s horrible, I love animals,” he said. “I think I just happened to be in her space, by accident.”

Olson says the incident was an eye-opener for him, and that him and other hikers should follow the rules and read signs from now on to prevent future attacks.

“Read and obey the rules, I guess, is what should have happened. I’m just not going to go off paths.”

Olson suffered from several scratches on his body, but was otherwise unharmed.
