Vacating the UFC featherweight championship Conor McGregor won over Jose Aldo in December was never considered an option by the “Notorious” Irish titleholder.
Even after McGregor was upended in an entertaining showdown with Nate Diaz at 170 pounds just a few weeks ago, that was never going to be the case.
The Dubliner was expected to move down to 145 pounds and defend his hardware against either of the angry duo, Aldo or Frankie Edgar, but word is UFC officials plan on holding up the division just a little bit longer.
An announcement is expected in the coming week, so SBG Ireland coach John Kavanagh says, regarding McGregor and a rematch with Diaz at UFC 200 in July.
Hopefully they took the Stockton slugger’s demands into account.
Whether McGregor wins or loses at the blockbuster pay-per-view (PPV) event, it seems like a forgone conclusion that a title defense will occur next, and I couldn’t think of a better venue or location than smack dab in “The Big Apple.”
“That would be amazing, realistically that would be huge for the first New York show,” Roddy told Sky Sports (via FOX Sports). “Madison Square Garden would be fantastic. “[McGregor and Edgar could fight] at featherweight or even at lightweight — Frankie spends a lot of time there, and he was the lightweight champion. But if Conor is on the card, it would be huge anywhere.”
One, two … Frankie’s coming for you.
McGregor isn’t scared homie and if anything, his first UFC loss actually lit a fire underneath him.
A second tussle with the former lightweight title challenger Diaz is a surefire payday, but a collision with “The Answer,” close to his neck of the woods in New Jersey, may just be the right fight to kick off mixed martial arts (MMA) in New York.
Now that MMA is legal, a litany of combatants have showed out and begun campaigning for a spot on the first New York card. Why not throw Edgar, a winner of five in-a-row, on there?
