Before Junior dos Santos faces Ben Rothwell in Sunday’s UFC Zagreb main event, check out Junior’s heavyweight title defense against Frank Mir from May 2012.
On May 26th, 2012, the UFC promoted an all-heavyweight PPV main card, capped off with a main event between heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. While they kept the heavyweight theme rolling, a failed drug test meant that JDS would end up fighting Frank Mir, which resulted in Antonio Silva replacing Frank against Cain Velasquez in the co-main.
In today’s free fight video, you can relive Junior’s destruction of Frank Mir in a main card that featured nothing but finishes, with 0 fights going past the end of round 2. Mir was already hurt at the end of round 1, famously incorrectly stating the arena he was in (Mandalay Bay instead of MGM Grand) while in the corner. It didn’t get much better fr him in round 2, as Junior smashed Mir with a right hand, swarmed on him with punches, then bopped him on the head with a hammerfist to end the slaughter.
All of the action can be viewed at the top of the page.
Round 2 – Mir needs to go for broke to get this to the ground. Hard straight right hand for Junior, and again. Good shot lands for Junior, Mir goes down, Junior walks away, Mir pops right back up. Mir with a left hand and again. Eye poke and Herb Dean said he didn’t see it so Mir is forced to fight while squinting away the pain. Another hard shot by Junior. Mir with a leg kick and another, not sure why he had stopped for about a round. And again he lands to the leg. Right hand drops Mir, Dos Santos is on him, Mir is trying to defend, he reaches for Junior and can’t find him, so he slides in a circle, clearly out of it. One more shot by Junior and the ref ends it. Junior dos Santos wins by TKO (punches), 3:04 of round 2.
Here’s the Bloody Elbow community’s reaction to the finish:
This would be the only time JDS would successfully defend his belt, as Cain Velasquez took it in the rematch and then bludgeon him with that same belt in the trilogy bout. Now coming off a KO loss to Alistair Overeem, JDS headlines this Sunday’s UFC Fight Night card against surging contender Ben Rothwell in Zagreb, Croatia.
