The illustrious Eddie Bravo Invitational returns on April 24th, but this time it is different. Instead of EBI 6 airing on pay-per-view, the promotion has signed a streaming deal with UFC Fight Pass and is set to feature one of the greatest open weight submission only tournaments ever. In the weeks leading up to the event, Bloody Elbow will be giving you the low down on the strengths and background of each competitor. We will kick off our inaugural addition with a look into Abraham Marte.

Abraham Marte

Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rickson Gracie > Marcelo Behring > Fernando Yamasaki > Abraham Tabar > Abraham Marte Messina

Team: GFTeam

Weight + 220lbs

Abraham Marte is an interesting character. While Marte may not be the biggest name in competitive grappling, he sure does bring a lot to the table at EBI 6. Marte is one of the largest competitors on the field and holds two victories over current ADCC champion Orlando Sanchez.  Marte’s sheer physicality is a lot to deal with in its own right, but when you take into account the technical guard playing that Marte brings to the fore it is hard to deny that he has a good chance of making it to the latter stages of the tournament.

What makes Marte a threat at EBI is his propensity to finish. Marte is dangerous from all areas on the ground and while he specializes in armbars and triangle chokes, Marte is equally able to take his opponents backs and score rear-naked chokes.  Marte comes to finish and win, lose or draw, he will make sure that his matches at EBI are action packed.

First Round Opponent: Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez

As a pure style match-up this one is really interesting. We will talk about Richie and his elaborate style in a later installation of this series, but I will say this much now: Abraham Marte is a much bigger athlete than Martinez. Marte could be considered a solid outsider that could shock the jiu jitsu world at EBI 6.

The Eddie Bravo Invitational 6 goes down at the Orpheum Theatre, in Los Angeles, CA on April 24 and will be streamed live and exclusively on UFC Fight Pass.
