In a recent interview with Bloody Elbow’s Three Amigos Podcast, Mighty Mouse discussed Henry Cejudo’s claims that he should be considered the best combat sports athlete in the world with a win over him.
In just a few short hours, UFC 197 will kick off at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada. It will see a fantastically matched flyweight title bout between reigning champion, Demetrious Johnson and Number 1 contender, Henry Cejudo, in what many are predicting to be a FOTN performance.
In a recent interview with the Three Amigos Podcast, Johnson discussed Cejudo’s biggest asset, whether he feels Cejudo is ready for this ultimate test and how he feels about Cejudo’s comment that he should be considered greatest combat sports athlete ever if he manages to defeat him.
When it comes to Henry Cejudo, self-belief is the biggest boon to his game in DJ’s eyes. It’s a trait he believes every fighter should possess.
“I admire his mental game. He believes in himself, he pumps himself up. He talks about himself in a third person view and I admire that. I think every fighter in the world needs to pump themselves up and I think he does a really good job at it.”
Cejudo recently stated that he felt with a win over Johnson, it puts him in a category all by himself, and he should be recognized as the greatest combat sports athlete ever. Demetrious has a different opinion, though.
“I can see why he’d say that and it’s awesome that he thinks it, but anybody can win a world championship, but can someone defend it seven times in a row? Defend it seven times and get some finishes in there, as well. That’s more impressive than winning the belt and a gold medal.”
With just 10 fights under his belt, Cejudo has quickly moved up the ranks for this title shot. The question here is whether he’s ready for it, or if he’s maybe still a little green for such lofty aspirations. Johnson thinks he’s absolutely ready for the challenge.
“Absolutely. I absolutely think he deserves the title shot. Why not? We’ve seen people get title shots coming off losses. Henry Cejudo is undefeated, he has a win in the bantamweight division, a higher up weight class, and to me, he seems like a very suitable contender. I trained my butt off and didn’t take him lightly. I’m ready to go.”
