The official purses for Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan may seem relatively small, but they’re making a lot more than that.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Amir Khan will step into the ring later tonight to duke it out for Canelo’s middleweight titles, and each man is making a nice chunk of change to show up. The official purses have been released for each man (via Bad Left Hook), with Alvarez being guaranteed 3.5 million and Khan 2 million for their HBO PPV bout.
If that seems sort of low for such a big-ticket attraction, it’s because it doesn’t factor in many other revenue streams for the fighters. As noted a few days ago, both men will receive PPV points on the back end, and each man will also get paid from a TV deal they have – Canelo with TV Azteca in Mexico, Khan with BoxNation in the UK. Khan could make up to 13 million for the bout, while Canelo will likely get even more than that.
Here’s how much the rest of the fighters on the HBO PPV card are making:
David Lemieux $200,000
Glen Tapia $150,000
Mauricio Herrera $175,000
Frankie Gomez $90,000
Curtis Stevens $65,000
Patrick Teixeira $50,000
